It's, again, an unfair standard since none of the past WW writers on the last 23 years have cared to do so as well. And yes, the backups are sidestories because nothing that happens on them is actually influencing the main story. Is being framed as secondary fun stories to acompany the intense tone of the main story.
And, again, Tom King never ever ever neeeever writes superhero stories from the pov of the protagonists themselves. It's just his way to tell things, as Rucka having anticlimatic endings, or Mark Russell usin pratchettian humour. It not some deep conspiracy about him hating the character.
