This really does remind me of Captain America with they kept Sharon Carter old for a while even after Steve came back and still had them together before eventually just making her young again.

But I mean ultimately Barry and Iris should be the same age one way or another so whatever age Barry looks/is I feel like Iris should be.

I recently read the Flash Rebirth TPB which had Geoff Johns' notes at the end. The idea was to pretty much reconfigure the Flash franchise with Barry (and Iris) at the forefront - 'reboot' him for the modern era the same way his other Justice League peers had been way back. Yes, there was a lot more psychological depth to Barry now, but there was also a 'back to basics' approach - Barry's the Flash and the top CSI at the CCPD, Iris is a crime reporter, they're a (married) couple, the Rogues are in business etc. In other words, the Silver/Bronze Age status quo filtered through a 2010's prism.

Indeed. All things considered, a truly satisfying accomplishment (IMHO):
