Maybe pulling out of the marketing right after the disappointing opening might have been a good decision for the studio executives who weren't willing to spend more cash on what is going to be another major flop.
Shang Chi film also debuted not only at the height of corona pandemic but also at the height of anti-Asian sentiment in North America, so it should have flopped like Mulan film but it didn't and managed to become a moderate box office success.
That is correct. I apologize for the confusion. I should have inserted the article "THE" to differentiate the 2 Suicide Squad movies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Suicide_Squad_(film)

The numbers for this Sunday dropped to -32.7%. Shazam 2 made only $7,405,697 this Sunday
The numbers for this Monday dropped to -77.2%. Shazam 2 made only $1,691,328 this Monday. That is almost $6 million less than the earnings from the previous day.
The box office ratings aren't looking good for Shazam 2 film.
Ah yes that HBO Max, too.
WW84 was released December 2020. Shang-Chi was released September 2021.
That's almost a year with a critical thing in between: the vaccine.
I realize the pandemic lasted a long time, and is still going, but the "height" Shang-Chi came out in--also the end of summer, when illness is typically down due to warm weather--is not the same that WW84 did.
No movie was making making money at the time WW84 came out. Not even Christopher Nolan.
Putting aside any dislike fans or critics may have had for the movie, WW84 bombing had everything to do with the pandemic and simultaneous release. It would have done substantially better even with the overall response had they been able to wait one more year to release it.
‘Shazam! Fury Of The Gods’: Zachary Levi Talks Snyder Fans & Says Marketing Was “Biggest Issue” In Box Office Results
Could better marketing make a difference? if the studios had promoted the film more aggressively, would the film make more money?
The Suicide Squad came out at around the same time as the Shang Chi film. Only one month difference. The Suicide Squad made only $169 million earnings against the budget of $185 million
Maybe, but you can't discount the fact that it was just a terrible movie. Take the pandemic out of the equation, and all the poor word-of-mouth would've caught up to WW1984 at some point.
Like, no offense, but what arrangement of circumstances could there have been, for WW1984 to be celebrated and hailed as financially successful?
Australian adventurer, and Orange Ranger.
I'm not sure why 'Black Adam' was ever a thing before he showed up in Shazam. Black Adam is a great foe of Captain Marvel. Yeah, he was used to pretty good effect in JSA way back when -- but he should have debuted as a villain -- not in his own movie. I think most of this mess is on Johnson. He wanted his film, but it probably would have been more successful if B.A. debuted in a Shazam movie.
I do think Shazam could have been a more serious movie than it was. The idea of a kid with a grown up body and powers is interesting, but that isn't what Captain Marvel used to be. Cap was an adult version of Billy -- with the wisdom of Solomon -- he would not act like a kid in an adult body. I don't mind when Shazam goes more into fantasy that straight or grim stories, but the Black Adam story debuted in the Golden Age -- and it was always pretty dark. Black Adam should have debuted in the second Shazam movie -- and it probably would have done a lot better than Shazam or Black Adam.
What a mess. And frankly, I do think super hero fatigue is setting in -- largely because the properties are not being handled right by DC and Marvel.
It also doesn't help that when you see Billy in both films, he's usually serious and doesn't make a ton of jokes. So the excuse that "Shazam is jokey because he's Billy with powers" doesn't even work because Billy acts nothing like Shazam.
