Aunt May is a supporting cast member without special abilities. Increasingly, such characters can only expect death and/or a rapid switch to villain in a comic book. The sad fact that writers can't manage to write characters who are incapable of knocking someone's teeth out is a sign of dwindling storytelling talent within the medium.
Thats great i have been buying old issues of what if and now i here this new what if
True. It does seem like all the civilian support characters end up either getting powers themselves, or being killed off. Lois Lane seems to be the only major exception (even Mary Jane isn't one, look at her current storyline with Black Cat).
Look at various comics -
Iron Man: Happy Hogan was killed off during Civil War, Pepper Potts is now a superhero called Rescue.
Hulk: Betty Ross became Red She-Hulk, General Ross became Red Hulk, Rick Jones was A-Bomb for a while.
Hercules: Amadeus Cho later became a Hulk, now known as Brawn.
X-Men: Moira McTaggart was for a long time a non-mutant ally, but House of X revealed she was in fact a mutant.
Daredevil: Karen Page was killed off.
Thor: Jane Foster later took on the powers of Thor herself and is now Valkyrie.
Captain America: Sharon Carter is about to take over the mantle of the golden age Destroyer. Her aunt Peggy was resurrected and took on a codename as well, Dryad.
Same at DC:
Flash: Wally West's wife Linda Park became a speedster herself recently due to pregnancy.
Superman: Clark's ex Lana Lang was Superwoman a few years ago. Conner's first girlfriend Tana Moon was killed off.
Green Lantern: Hal Jordan's love interest Carol Ferris is Star Sapphire. Kyle Rayner had a girlfriend literally fridged.
No doubt there's plenty of other examples.

Yes, but he's had a couple of close calls. He once faked his death, and he's also a cancer survivor.
