More recently I bought a few thrift store volumes of a manga thriller called JUDGE, I'd mistaken it for another work by the same author called SECRET. Both feature creepy rabbit masks on the cover...

Yes. Like you, I bought a variant I thought was new. I also bought reprints I thought were new books once or twice.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

I'm a big fan of the Legion of Superheroes and before internet resources were available, it happened a few times that I bought a newsstand version of a book where I already had the "baxter" direct market version, as those had different covers and numbers for a while.
