Yeah, there's no reason to use the Smallville setting otherwise, I'd expect Jonathan and Martha to be in the supporting cast - maybe Conner too, since Superboy was living with them. Maybe a villain attacks, Ice tries to get Fire to stay hidden, and Conner ends up taking the spotlight, to Fire's chagrin. Helps Clark keep the pair in line, you know? Then by issue 6, something big happens and the duo have to step in and save the day. If that's not the end of the series, they then decide to stay long term and be the town's defenders.

I don't think Conner ever returned to Smallville after Bendis had him up and leave when he started his, shall we say, ill-fated YOUNG JUSTIVE run.

I dunno - to me he's still kinda got the crazy eyes... and I guess this is his summer look? Rockin' a crew neck instead of the turtle neck under his vest. I also wonder if his first line is that he could've handled it himself but let them do it to be nice or something... seems like an old-school Guy kind of comment for a mini that seems to be mining that era (and without a regular book, Guy's personality is a bit more "case by case" characterization (guess we'll see in "Doom Patrol"))

I like that Fire still appears to have clothes on when she's in "Flame on" mode. Impressive that she's able to turn a tidal wave into steam, because if she doesn't get that water hot enough, it'll just become hot water, which would melt right through Ice's barricade.

Yeah I think the days of Fire turning flame on nude are over. I like how they showed her controlling parts of her flame as she holds Ice in non-flame mode while flying.

He got a modern update to his bowl cut and hopefully he keeps it.
