Rumor is David Bowie refused to let his music be used for the movie because the source material was a tell-all book written by his ex-wife...

Iwould say the sound track to "Jesus Christ Superstar" which is kind of cheating because it's a musical, but, hey.
    Power with Girl is better.

Probably my third favorite rock movie...( 70's version though, there's been a couple of remakes/updates )

I never saw the movie until it was on TV, and what little I saw wasn't all that memorable.

But the soundtrack album I bought back in the day when vinyl was still king!
A lot of great stuff on that, including the title track by Steely Dan.

The first thing I thought of was Drive, and I feel like an awful hipster now. Realistically my favourite soundtrack would be a composite of the various Twin Peaks series and movie though, which have a tonne of amazing selections (“ladies and gentlemen - the Nine Inch Nails!”).

Discounting musicals, I would say Star Wars (1977). Just about wore that album out.

    Also, Superman (1978).

I would say Rocky 4 but I think that's kind of still cheating since Rocky 4 basically was a music video masquerading as a movie.

When it comes to great use of music, I think "Watchmen" did a great job of choosing music for the mood and the era.

Although a streaming series, not a movie, the second season of the Umbrella Academy did a fantastic job of capturing 1963, the more so because they wanted to capture the grownup world of that time, not the teenaged world. So, instead of the Beatles, it was Dean Martin, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, and so on. It was almost a sound track and Who's Who of the singers people of 30+ would have been listening to.

Maybe those last two don't count because they were not music original to the movie or show but still.
