Which I feel like comparing it is a bit much.

Its clearly doing a different, and should be judged on its own merits. Its doesn't matter if its as good as SMT, what matters is that its plainly good.

Which I just started reading SMT and I'm finding it as enjoyable as I found this.

But the story in Sandman Mystery Theatre had Crimson Avenger and Phantom of the Fair show up well after Wes had been Sandman, and I don't remember if they even had any connection between Wes and Lee Travis (The Crimson Avenger).
So it wasn't exactly a "retelling" of the story from Secret Origins #7.

Yes. That's why I said it "retold a version" of that story. It had a lot of the same elements, but it wasn't exactly the same and it wasn't his origin. That seems pretty clear.

I'm sure the initial print run was small, but a second printing is always a good sign. So far this is my favorite of the recent JSA revivals.

I absolutely would not mind if Venditti were to pick up the JSA book. I dont think I've not enjoyed one of his books.

As for WD:Sandman, would I have preferred another artist? Definitely...Rossmo is far from my pick for anything, however his style works well here and it seems like he has possibly even toned it down a little from Tim Drake.

I actually look forward to this book each month.

Even his run on The Flash where he and Van Jensen co-wrote it during the New52?

    Second issue was pretty good.

We’re introduced to the villain. A “dark Sandman”. Kinda looks like The Shadow.

It was interesting to see Wesley having an Openheimer-like moment. The extreme guilt over what he has created that could kill countless people.

So Alan has Red Lantern, now Wesley has this "Dark Sandman" - an archenemy who has the same costume with different colors. Barry's had Reverse-Flash, I wonder what Jay's opposite number will look like. The gas definitely looks like that suped-up mustard gas that Dr Poison whipped up in the WW movie.

Jay already has an evil doppelgänger called Rival.

Cool!! I want a Rival reboot! And did someone say, "slow-down gas??" Sounds like a perfect Sandman tie-in.
