Maybe not odd but I used to go to Roller Derby games when I was a kid. They used to travel around like a circus. Sometimes they played at the old Chicago Ampitheater or at the local Civic Center.

Philly used to have a roller derby team, the Warriors. They played at the old Philadelphia Arena near 46th & Market Street where American Bandstand used to be filmed.

I watch the Nathans Hot Dot Eating Contest every year and it blows me away. I am close to 300 pounds and 4 Hot Dogs put me out. Yet this skinny little guys are eating like 30 and 40. I dont get it.

We have a team in Cincy. The Cincy Roller Girls. They sometimes show their matches on public access. I love watching it. And I love some of the wacky names that some of the teams have. There was a team called THe Grumpy Grannies made up of ladies in their 50s and 60s. How they played it with out breaking a bone I dont know.

When it comes to professional eaters, size and/or girth doesn’t mean squat. One of the most popular eaters in the circuit is Sonya Thomas, a five foot nothing Korean born woman nicknamed “The Black Widow”, and she easily holds her own with the boys. The local sportstalk radio station here in Philly used to hold a wing eating contest on the Friday before the Super Bowl, Thomas participated one year and blitzed the field which, if memory serves, included famed eater, Joey Chestnut.

I wouldn’t call either of them “odd” but was a keen watcher of a couple of minority watcher of a couple of sports not often televised these days.

One was greyhound racing, mainly because I loved the dogs, and there was a track 200 yards from my house.

The other was stock car racing…basically whacking big engines into old cars, tuning them up, and racing them round a circular track for a given number of laps. The good drivers starting from the back of the field, and shunting other cars out of the way encouraged. That was non stop action.

    For me, it's lacrosse.

I don't know how they manage to get the ball into those tiny nets on the stick. But it fascinates me.

That sport is huge in Maryland. They go nuts over it.

I occasionally watch college matches on ACC Network, and, it is interesting. There’s also a pro league I do believe.
