I'm curious how far they're going to take that because it depends a lot on the media DC/WB produces and how it will impact the actors' schedule. I'm worried it might be too much.

Excerpts from Jeff Sneider's column on Above the Line:

Corenswet was one of three finalists for the role alongside Brits Tom Brittney and Nicholas Hoult, and sources say it came down to Brittney and Corenswet, with social media firmly on the latter’s side. [...] Corenswet and Brosnahan and their respective teams were notified on Monday night once Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav signed off on the decision. Gunn and Safran were extremely tight-lipped about their own preferences while soliciting objective opinions from WB execs whose input in such a decision would be valued. Warners was motivated to find its Clark and Lois this week before SAG-AFTRA’s current contract with the AMPTP expires on June 30, which is when everyone’s testing deals would’ve expired.

Corenswet had been hotly tipped for the role after being all but coronated by Twitter and TikTok, which were dominated by pro-Corenswet sentiment in the days leading up to the announcement. The actor is best known for his turn as The Projectionist opposite Mia Goth in Ti West‘s A24 movie Pearl, and he also appeared in HBO’s acclaimed crime series We Own This City as well as a pair of middling Ryan Murphy series — The Politician and Hollywood.

Sources have long acknowledged that Corenswet is more than a pretty face, but they’ve also expressed concern that he has what it takes to serve as the lynchpin of an entire cinematic universe. Of course, there were similar concerns surrounding Henry Cavill, but he was paired with then-three-time (now six-time) Oscar nominee Amy Adams, and he rose to the occasion and held his own. Brosnahan, who won an Emmy early in her career for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, will no doubt push Corenswet in similar fashion.

The fact that Corenswet is American likely worked to his advantage, and while some were worried that his striking resemblance to Henry Cavill could be a mark against him as Gunn sets out to visually differentiate the DCU from the DCEU that preceded it, I’m told the director had no problem with that resemblance.

Corenswet is a little too pretty — Gunn’s typical protagonists have a little edge to them — but then again, he had the internet on his side, and Gunn clearly cares about social media sentiment given the amount of time he spends on Twitter and Blue Sky. This is a win as far as the fans are concerned, as they’ll likely feel that the studio listened to them and be more invested in Corenswet’s Superman — and the larger DCU — as a result. Corenswet is also half-Jewish, and identifies as Jewish, which is a nice nod to Superman’s creators, writer Jerry Siegel and illustrator Joe Shuster, both of whom were Jewish.

    I'm feeling good about this.

Dude looks the part (too pretty, but at least he doesn't look totally soft) and nobody has a negative thing to say about our new Lois. I don't know either of these people or their work but I like what I see and get a good vibe from it.

I was actually gonna say the other day, the one type I'd cast myself is a guy who reminds me of James Caan. But these days it's all you can do to find a buffer version of Ezra Miller.

These two at worst remind me of the things I liked about Reeve, Cavill, and Kidder, respectively. Also great voices and mannerisms from what I see.

Im happy with this casting and all but when are we finally breaking out of the Luthor curse ? Like when are we having Brainiac. Like I think I might be with Ascended now with going all in and you can go bigger in the Superman rogues gallery(outside of Darkseid) than Brainiac.

I don’t think Gunn is gonna make Lex the main villain in the movie. But Lex is a big part of Metropolis and Superman’s world. He’ll probably be a supporting character who will reveal his master plan in the next film.

Welcome to the Superverse, David Corenswet!

Honestly, never heard of him before, though apparently I would have seen him in House of Cards. But he looks the character perfectly. In fact, he kinda looks like a younger version of Henry Cavill, with a bit of Tom Welling thrown in!

Rachel Brosnahan looks picture-perfect as Lois Lane as well.

Look, I do feel bad for Cavill but that ship has sailed now. Maybe someday, we could get a COIE movie or something with Cavill as the Earth 2 Superman. But for now, I'm hear for Corenswet as our new Man of Steel.

Corenswet started being fancast as Superman 4 years ago for his resemblance to Cavill, here's what he said back in 2019 about Superman:

David Corenswet knows you think he looks like Henry Cavill.

As the introspective River on Netflix’s The Politician, the 26-year-old — who caught audiences’ eyes and the heart of Ben Platt’s Payton — admits he’s been aware of the striking resemblance to the British film star for a while.

“It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me,” he tells EW. “But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”

I’ve seen some complaints about his physique and I just want to remind everyone that Cavill looked like this when he was casted:

He’s taller than Cavill so all he has to do is bulk up which he’ll be paid to do. By the time he starts filming he’s probably going to look very different physique wise.

Since we're talking about physiques and I watch too many health/fitness YouTube videos...

...would anyone be appalled if Corenswet used PEDs?

Haven't seen any complaints about the guy's physique myself but I'm not surprised that's starting. Again. We do this every time. But dude is about to spend a year with an army of physical trainers and meal specialists. Getting actors ready for roles like this has become its own little industry, and they've become very good at it. It's not a question of whether he'll bulk up or not, it's what kind of bulk are they going for? Lean and athletic? Strong and heavy? Kid seems like he's got a good frame, so muscle isn't gonna be a problem.

You mean like old school MLB steroids? Appalled, no. Disappointed, yes.

Bulking up like these actors do, it's not healthy even when there's no drug use involved. Gonna be hell on your body no matter what. Drugs that'll fuck up your system even more aren't a solution, and they're not 'necessary' to achieve the desired results. If an actor just absolutely can't bulk up right on their own, there's cgi, there's fake muscle shirts, there's a hundred answers just as cost effective that don't involve risking your health and shrinking your junk so you can't properly celebrate your newfound success anyway.

But it's a common practice I hear, so if Corenswet uses too, I won't be surprised or judge too harshly.

He has the look, but I haven't seen him in anything so I don't know what he is like as an actor.
