DC doing 20 different Batman stories is pretty problematic because I can never keep up with all of it. The best Batman comic out there for me right now is the White Knight story. I liked Batgirls a lot but that got canceled. But all these variants DC is doing. I kind of get the feeling if there were only 3 Batman comics, and the rest focused on the Bat Family in some way/shape or form they'd sell better. I'm happy that Poison Ivy is outselling Nightwing now, but now we've got to wait till November for the next one of that, which sucks.

I wish that there were more anthology comics where you could fit 5 different writers interpretations of a Batman story into them and see what they do and see how the reception is if those got spun off into. But I know that's not going to happen.

Some of the best stories are going to wind up being lost in the shuffle of obscurity. There's so many stories I hear about happening that I have no clue transpired because trying to stick with the main Batman comic (which I can't even place at this point) is hard enough as it is.

When they do 'stunt casting' like this, I find they tend to make the character little more than the sum of their demographic, demeaning everyone involved.)

But this thread is about sales; the business of comics. And no matter how amazing this character is, or how well written it is, the vast majority of comic book readers will never know because they're not buying this book with this hero. And that's the point I was making. By all the accounts I've read, sales are probably the worst they've ever been across the board, including ASM. Less people are buying comic books practically by the week. So, which genius decided the best way to turn that around was to FEATURE a character who connects to what...3% of the readership? Maybe?

And it relates to a larger trend in Marvel (and DC, for that matter). They've driven off perhaps a solid 60% of the audience they had a decade or two ago by dedicating most of their attention to All New, All Different characters when the vast majority of people who (used to) read comics just wanted to see the same heroes they grew up with. Or, even worse, they bring in writers to deconstruct and destroy heroes the readers did love, shoving away fans. It's almost like they don't want a solid half of the potential audience to have any reason to spend their money on Marvel comics.

Forget the politics of it. Focus on the business. Honest questions...who exactly is this book marketed towards? How is it expected to be successful and improve sales given the titular hero?
    This is some absolute bullshit.

Edge of Spider-Verse (2022) #4 was one of Marvel's best selling comics that month: https://icv2.com/articles/markets/vi...september-2022

The Edge of Spider-Verse (2022) mini-series sold so well that Marvel went ahead with a follow-up series for 2023: https://twitter.com/DanSlott/status/1659903550145589250

None of the Edge of Spider-Verse characters were designed to replace other characters, or expected to launch into ongoing series (but if any did take off, like Spider-Gwen, that would be a big bonus). Sun-Spider's story was just one of four stories in Edge of Spider-Verse (2022) #4.

The Spider-Verse animated movie team team saw enough value in the character, from her very brief 2020 comic appearance, to give her a small speaking role in Across the Spider-Verse. Marvel would have known about this when deciding which characters should be featured in the Edge of Spider-Verse (2022) mini-series. Sun-Spider was also part of the hero team in the End of Spider-Verse story that Edge of Spider-Verse led into.

You can talk about the struggles the comic industry is currently facing all you want, but getting up in arms about a disabled lesbian super-hero starring in a 6 page story in an anthology mini-series (that sold well) is a you problem.

It's probably a stealth "let the artists catch up" program - they've said that's what they were doing explicitly in the past with one of the events (maybe the New 52 .1 villains specials around issue 23 or so?). DC tends to use fill in artists less on their big books if they can avoid it, either by dialing in one-off issues in continuity that allow the artist to catch up or doing these skip months.

Curious how this lands in 2 weeks. The long term sales of the trades would be interesting to see

There was a new printing of an Epic Collection that is heavily marketed as collecting Kraven's Last Hunt that was ranked higher than the new volume of ASM.

The analysis suggests Amazing Spider-Man is selling well.

The Spider-Man franchise had two titles in the Top 10, six titles in the Top 25, and eleven titles in the Top 50. This was worse than May 2023 when the Spider-Man franchise had four titles in the Top 10, nine titles in the Top 25, and thirteen titles in the Top 50. However, year-over-year numbers were up substantially as the Spider-Man franchise had two titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50 in June 2022.

Amazing Spider-Man #27 dominated the sales ranking by taking the coveted #1 spot. This title remains white hot as readers simply cannot get enough of Amazing Spider-Man these days. It is going to be interesting to see how long Amazing Spider-Man can keep up this impressive run in the sales rankings. At this point, there is nothing other than the flagship Batman title that has a chance of dethroning Amazing Spider-Man.

Amazing Spider-Man #28 shipped in the last week of June 2023 and still managed to score the number 18 spot. That is ridiculous. Usually, when a title ships two issues in a month, the second issue is far down in the sales rankings. Marvel Comics can seemingly do no wrong right now with the Spider-Man franchise.

What is phenomenal is that the resolicitation for Amazing Spider-Man #26 almost cracked the Top 10 by taking the number 12 spot. That is insane. To see a resolicitated issue score this high in the sales rankings is lunacy. Right now it is Peter Parker’s world and we are all just living in it.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

I think its selling really decent, but not to the extent of money gang busters like superior or other runs. A lot of data is fueling that the comic industry in 23 is kind of hitting a harder downturn, I think DC will probably be the one that is hurt the most at the end of the year vs marvel.

adding a quote from the article

"Zeb Wells had three titles with Amazing Spider-Man #26, Amazing Spider-Man #27, and Amazing Spider-Man #28 in the Top 50. That is impressive, but not as impressive as the other writers since Wells did it with the same title."

"The Spider-Man franchise took first place with two titles in the Top 10, six titles in the Top 25, and eleven titles in the Top 50. Eleven comics in the Top 50!! Good lord! The Spider-Man franchise completely Godzilla stomped every other franchise. It just is not even competitive at this moment."

Spidermans cooking for now post the mystery box stuff it could see uptick in interest, Wells new arc is being received much more positively than the previous ones & there's genuine interest in Slotts work for Spider-Boy. Feels bad though for some of these side books Silk dropped hard.
