I think the character was misused and we should wait to see what Steve Foxe does with it.
But the Neyaphem idea is interesting, it should be developed more to make the link with Okkara and arrako, especially with the character of Syzya of the Smoke in X-men red

I don't like Austen's run like most people. But I do like Azazel. And I like him as Kurt's father. I think it's better than all other proposed options. But I think he shouldn't be an actually be a demon and it's better if he's just a mutant who lies to get people to follow and fear him more than they already would. Him being able to travel to and from the afterlife with his powers shouldn't have happened.

It was clearly established in his first appearances what Azazel is a mutant like Kurt, not a real demon. Like Kurt he was treated like a demon because of his appearance, but unlike Kurt who wants to be seen as human being with weird appearance, Azazel have fully accepted the connection and likes to pretend to be an actual demon.

Personally I like Azazel and Abyss and Kiwi Black and want to see more interaction between them and Kurt. At least Kurt seemed to be genuinely interested to connect with his half-brothers at the end of Draco, but they had never interacted ever since.

Even though that was Austen’s intent, are there any stories that take place before it where she uses the name?

Never heard about such intentions. Where in those panels is it mentioned anything about "mystique"? Azazel only calls her Raven.

Oh, I see. Thanks=)) Just checked some of Raven's previous appearances in X-Treme X-Men #1 (her first meeting with Irene in 19 century) and X-Men True Friends (she, Irene and Logan during WWII). In all cases she was only referred as Raven (or Mr. Raven in X-Men True Friends). So it seems she hadn't used "Mystique" name before, so Austen hadn't retconned anything with this scene and it could've indeed been an inspiration for Raven to adopt this name.

In books after Austen's run, like Wolverine #62-64 (her first meeting with Logan in 1921) she also only used Raven name. But in Immortal X-Men #8 during 1943 Irene already called her both Raven and Mystique. So, from in-universe point of view she had used this name long before she met Azazel.
