Plus they probably set it during the HR era since one set during the prequels or the earlier sequel era would kind of make one wonder what became of these padawans...
They could die in the purge or become the next survivors like Cal from Fallen order. But has the first order been around long enough to be that big of a threat? I thought they were more of a resurgence.

Mainly referring to Luke's class although what actually happened is never really made clear in the movies. TFA (Rey's vision) seems to imply it was the Knights of Ren with Kylo, but TLJ basically seems to rewrite that with Ben leaving "with a handful of students" (Perhaps implying that they became the Knights?).

The explanation is in the comic book Ben and Snoke basically set the academy on fire, the students chased Ben and Ben killed them when he was confronted, but almost by accident, and then ran off to join the Knights and Snoke (Who he had already met at that point).

There's a special handicap to any recast and/or reboot: there's a cheesy-in-joke quality to the OT that won't be tolerated in a successor.

Star Wars (numbers and subtitles deliberately omitted) was made as an homage to Flash Gordon serials, for an audience that could recall them without being prompted or primed. Lucas constructed backstory for the film, but (revisionist nonsense aside) it was not a fully-fleashed out post-The Silmarillion Tolkien-scale universe.

We not only tolerated, but embraced absurdities in effects, dialog and plot (looking at you Stormtroopers who were so precise in shooting at the Jawa crawler [and Owen and Beru]) that would never be tolerated today. It was a serial homage, that's all, and yet a phenomenal one, beyond anything ever seen.

SW carries more weight now. Financial, cultural, you name it. Not saying "can't" just "absurdly hard."

Indiana Jones is largely the same way (Tribute to adventure serials, pulp magazines, some golden age of Hollywood films featuring Bogart, Heston etc.) but never really had any major "lore" that could be fleshed out the way Star Wars has, partly because it's set much closer to reality. Also Indiana Jones merchandising and expanded material never was quite as successful as SW.

A lot of early Lucas projects are also the same way-American Grafitti (Lucas's youth) Radioland Murders, etc.

BTW kind of wonder what happens when Anthony Daniels passes on.

With Vader JEJ gave his blessing for AI to use his voice should Vader return, and many people have been in the suit for years.

With R2 and Chewbacca other people have been in the suit and in the case of R2 remote control and CG have been used for some time.

Yet Anthony has been both the voice (Even in animation and some games) and in the suit for Threepio for years, only exception being the puppet in TPM although Daniels still provided the voice and even did the puppet for AOTC before the reshoots decided to just have 3PO completed (although not gold) from the start.

Wouldn't be surprised if he sells his voice to Disney like JEJ did. Ethical debates about this tech aside, I kinda hope he does. I can't imagine anyone else's voice as Threepio.
