I understand they likely went with it for the sake of highlighting the many, many differences between Jor-El and Zod, but it feels visually distracting instead of interesting.

Casey mentioned that Kal and Joe are going to be akin to ghosts that haunt Zod throughout the series. Much like how Doom endlessly seethes over Reed, Zod probably will do the same over the Els. I want to know what he thinks of Kara, probably dislikes her but since she too pines over Krypton it would be good to see the two interact.

Solid first issue I still prefer Superman: World of New Krypton version of Zod overall but I'm liking this modern take that still holds true to the brutal dictator archetype he's always been while still allowing some depth and dimension, you might question Zod and Ursa immoral tactics but can't deny they do have a point that the United Planets "lets all hold hands and get along" policy just isn't practical to survival in such a hostile universe, also that it's Lor whose truly the bloodthirsty wannabe conquer of the family and it's Zod who has to be the voice of reason and reign his son in was a bit of a surprise.



Was wondering how they were going to handle both this and Sinister Sons going on concurrently and Lor seemingly being in both, having his parents banish him and kicking him off the planet so he can get first hand experience on how harsh and unforgiving the universe truly is and get a reality check so he can outgrow becoming a spoiled brat was a good direction. Zod rationalizing that if his son dies in process of this lesson in "tough love" that he and Ursa hadn't produced a worthy heir was also very on point for them.

It's weird how it parallels Clark and Lois letting Jon head out into space as a child but in this case actually makes sense for Ursa and Zod "sink or swim/survival of the fittest" mindsets instead of feeling like a contrivance.

Great start. Zod being more restrained than his son reminds me a bit of politics when people from one country try to evaluate how radical right/left-wing some president or whoever else is without realizing that by the standards of that country he might be closer to centrist than a radical.

Just popping in to give a "hell yeah" to this first issue. Based on Casey's mild bombast in the interview I read I wasn't sure, whether I liked this or not, how I'd feel about it as a piece of the greater DC tapestry. Oh, admittedly I haven't been keeping up on the whole of DC in 2023. The last stuff I was super up on was probably Dark Crisis? But I have been reading the Superman books sporadically and wondered if this would be tight, editorially.

I think it's just getting warmed up, but it seems like he's going to be able to do what he wants, big and bold and ruthless, without blowing up the cool stuff everyone else has done - but in particular in regards to the status of Zod post-Rebirth. I liked the First Issue House-Keeping. Lor/Chris goes off for Evil Super Sons adventures and things get political or sci-fi militaristic real fast and already I'm getting slight pangs of Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now fatalism, with a hint of Dune-style space realpolitik, a hint of Game of Thrones influence (probably endless deceptions and games), and a fair amount of a good writer nailing character voices; Zod's dialogue, the actual words he uses, read like both Stamp and Shannon's takes are rattling in the mix.

It feels laser-focused, foundation set in a good "continuity position", the "who" of where we start makes total sense, and on the sci-fi world-building level, with all that, and the art was hot, stylish, feels comfortable balancing the Silver Age roots of Comic Book Sci-Fi with an almost Military Comics tone, like mixing the Otto Binder era (apropos), or Fox/Broome, with a Kubert or Herb Trimpe comic.

This is a fun angle when you compare/contrast it to the life lessons he learned as Chris Kent in another, partially still canon, partially not, timeline. That time he was what, a test shot to try to break out of the Zone and you get the nature/nurture argument for parenting. And with Jon, yeah. You can make the "push the little bird out of the nest" comparison for both of these space walkabouts and clearly realize that results may vary.

(P.S. for wanting to just casually mention that Bendis never should have aged Jon up and now it's years later and just de-age him already, I want to see him be a proper age/peer/Pokemon rival with Zod's kid.)

Fun start, I especially loved seeing Zod going all out in the action. Nice that its not holding back on the gore, a rabid Kryptonian is certainly a messy affair.

As noted its interesting that while Zod hasn't softened in the slightest, he is ultimately taking a more practical approach here slowly building up his resources in secret, while Lor in his youthful exuberance wants to go straight to conquering. The General certainly didn't earn his name for nothing, he is taking a smart approach to this...... Darwinian parenting methods aside.
