I vividly remember the first time I read Ghost Rider #1. My brother had found it at a garage sale with a bunch of other older comic books in 1975-76ish. I remember I would ask to borrow it and just stare at the drawings.

I always loved Dick Ayers inking. He really was one of the greats who helped usher in the Marvel Age of comics. Sad to say goodbye.

His work on Fury with King Kirby is an all time classic.

I saw this earlier today and realised we don't have many from that era left. Al Feldstien died the other day and that only leaves us a small handful left including Steve Ditko who is still creating new work well into his 80's.

Thanks for the notification of a loss of an old friend. There are a couple of things the reader may want to know about Dick: 1) his first comic book work was on a title called Funnyman, published in 1947. His early work also included Cowboys and Indians #6 and Jimmy Durante, both from 1948. 2) Writer Roy Krank created the Western Ghost Rider, based on the song "Ghostriders in the Sky" followed on the title by Gardner Fox and Carl Memling. Dick illustrated all these early stories, including the transformation of the Calico Kid into Marshall Rex Fury (aka the Ghost Rider). This story was published in Tim Holt 11 from the M.E. comics company. Stan Lee brought the western character to Marvel in the early 60's along with some other minor M.E. western comics villains. I know for a fact the Dick loved working on the Ghost Rider; I wish we'd seen more of the original western character.
