As I said, it's fine that evil sometimes gets a W in Spider-Man's world, but only because of how comics work in that the bad guys winning isn't the end of the story (the "to be continued" at the end of stories is there for a reason, folks), just another obstacle for the hero to overcome.

Boy am I not looking forward to 34. Very worried about what he's going to pull I have similar vibes that I had before 31.
I'm an old-school Spawn fan, so I enjoy plenty of grimdark comics and stories when done right, but I'd say even Spawn knew to throw the fans a moment of hope more than Wells does with his current ASM. It's just misery porn at this point, thus why I compare it to the likes of Lars von Trier. There's no hope. No light. Peter's only one reliable friend in the world is Norman freaking Osborn and the love of his life hates him and is in love with another man. Doesn't get much more miserable than that.

I am extremely anxious about issue 34 after that variant reveal. I am hoping so much that it's just a cover and MJ isn't in any way involved with Evil Spider-man and Wells somehow makes things even worse, but I've got zero faith. I genuinely feel this run will just get worse and worse, and it's only gonna get better when someone else comes along. IF then, even. I really don't trust any writer Nick Lowe installs on this title now.

I agree, but I'd say that there's a key difference between Evil Gets A Win and this run, where evil just keeps winning. The devil wins, love is meaningless and nothing matters. It's just continuous misery. The entire run is built on this Spider-Cuck foundation, so it's all miserable from the ground up. None of it is salvageable in my opinion.

I saw the leaked pages, boy, I have a conflict here.

On one hand, I'll say Spider-Man was in his right. I mean, he simply returned karma to Kraven; on the other hand, this is really scary.

technically, Spider-Man can be in the right in getting payback on Kraven, buuuut... the fact that it's Spider-Man, the goodest good guy of Marvel's stable of heroes, acting uncharacteristically brutal is what makes this all wrong.

But a writer, well, that's exactly in our wheelhouse.

What I mean by Shed is everything we needed to know is just that Shed is a story that's about the writer making choices. There is no light in Shed. It's the darkest possible outcome of the Lizard story. It's not out of character or "bad", per se, because the Lizard has attempted to do terrible things several times before, he's always just been held off by Spider-Man or just barely by Connors himself. Shed is the story where he loses that battle, and the darkness wins. The only thing the story is missing is Curt's suicide at the end, which is the only realistic outcome to that situation, for the darkness to be complete. It's not a story that's wrong, but it's a choice. It's a choice to indulge in that bleakness and dark world view. The bad guys will win. Love is transactional and temporary. You can never truly conquer your demons. There are whole series where this is the outlook, and some people enjoy them, and that's their right, for sure. But personally I find it completely unenjoyable. But sometimes the darkness has to win. Not every story has a happy ending, and it's valid that this is how the Lizard's story would end. There's a story that people don't refernce much from like the 80s I think where this kid is being chased throughout the city because he has dangerous powers. Spider-Man fights off his attackers and defends the kid, but eventually he fails. The kid is killed and no one cares, because it's a justifiable kill. And yet Peter is just left devastated by the whole affair. Even if justified it still feels wrong and tragic to him, because he has this outlook that he can fix everything and everything can work out. It's not a bad story though. It's just the devil taking his due. So sometimes those stories are ok. But you would hope that a writer has more tricks than just the one, and it's become quite apparent that Wells just doesn't. This run is just the darkness winning over and over. Of course MJ "moves on", love is meaningless and transactional. Of course he lets Tombstone walk away, there is no triumphing over evil. Of course Norman must save him from his sins, the evil is not overcomable by anyone, for it is the strongest thing there is. It's a bad fit for Spidey. And it's repetitiveness has gotten stale.
    Very good take.

It's going to be a long 18 months. Next writer's got their work cut out for them to make Spider-Man a joy again.

How confident are you that Spider-Goblin and Jackpot will fight? Is it in the region of 'too hot for her to handle'?

in my opinion yes but if she gets some good rolls I guess she could win. But if anyone should stop Peter it should be Norman

Norman will definitely be the one to stop him.
I'm excited for tomorrow now (can't find the leaks) but I thought they'd keep Spider-Goblin around for a lot longer. If he's going as dark as some are saying then this will be over by the end of the trade he's writing for.
Pissed off angry Sins Peter vs MJ could get too much. They've never had a screaming match. Peter indulging himself and putting himself in such an argument would be interesting.

We don't know if it's just Norman because nothing has been said but you can have Peter just say hurtful things and chalk it up as evil monologuing and we still have the watch Jackpots journey in ASM

If anyone should stop Peter, it should be Aunt May.

Remember Aunt May? C'mon, I can't see even brutal evil Peter winning one over from a legendary Aunt May verbal beat down or inspirational speech. We haven't had one of those in YEARS.

True enough, but every time he's gone to that edge, it's been a sign he's become severely emotionally unbalanced, which isn't something you really want to see with someone strong enough to knock an enhanced superhuman's jaw off in one blow.

Oh, definitely. That would be a great moment. Maybe she could confess that she figured out that he was Spider-Man while she's at it?

Shed did have a moment of light for Spider-Man. The story is set at a time when Aunt May was under Mr. Negative's influence, and nasty to Peter.

Towards the end, he needs her to help process the trauma he's been through, and she calms down for him.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets
