Default Why are there different cover designs on Marvel Masterworks?

I've seen some covers on Marvel Masterworks hardcovers that have a stone/granite background design, with an image inside a picture frame. Other Masterworks cover have gray backgrounds, and the image has no picture frame border and the image is much larger on the cover.

What's the story? First prints vs additional printings?

It has to do with when they were printed, yeah. Take the X-Men ones for example. Four different cover designs across the five books listed on the wiki.

Also some are hardcover and others are softcovers.

Adding to the above, the current Masterworks usually have variant covers (well, dustjackets) - the "modern" design, with the large cover image, and the original design with the "marble" texture.
