    No. 20: Pet Sematary (1989)

Dr. Louis Creed’s family moves into the country house of their dreams and discover a pet cemetery at the back of their property. The cursed burial ground deep in the woods brings the dead back to life – with “minor” problems. At first, only the family’s cat makes the return trip, but an accident forces a heartbroken father to contemplate the unthinkable.

The very first time I ever watched this Zelda scared the crap out of me, but after watching it so many years later I realized she still freaking does.

    No. 21: The Boogeyman (2023)

Still reeling from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl and her younger sister find themselves plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggle to get their grieving father to pay attention before it’s too late.

I couldn't get Rob Zombie's song out of my head the entire time watching this

    No. 22: Gerald’s Game (2017)

When her husband’s sex game goes wrong, Jessie (who is handcuffed to a bed in a remote lake house) faces warped visions, dark secrets and a dire choice.

Carla Gugino cuffed to a bed in a nightie for an entire movie!! You had me at hello.

I guess it was still sort of on-theme for my vampire weekends. Mutated killer bats run amok in the Southwest, it's up to a sheriff and a sexy chiropterologist to save the day. It's a decent throwback creature feature, in the vein of Tremors or (IIRC) Arachnophobia, but not as good as either. The cast is game, and the FX do their part, but the script and/or the direction just lacks that extra spark to provide memorable moments and characters.

It was hyped as the most book-faithful adaptation at the time. I'm not sure if that's really true beyond the first act. Christopher Lee gets to recite some lines from the book, which is nice. But otherwise, the very low budget just makes this inferior to many of the Hammer films and Universal's. Klaus Kinski is Renfield, or maybe they just filmed him during a stay in a sanitarium and didn't tell him it was for a movie.

    80. Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) - First sequel in the long running Hellraiser franchise, and arguably the best of any of the productions following the original, though it does have plenty of flaws of its own, along with some effects work which hasn't aged very well.

    81. Re-animator (1985) - Cult classic based on the H.P. Lovecraft serial novelette "Herbert West–Reanimator", the film revolves around Herbert West, a medical student who has created an agent that can reanimate the dead. It's classified as a horror comedy, though the comedy is usually fairly subtle and might fly over some heads, standout performances by Jeffrey Combs as West and David Gale, who is creepy and menacing as the talking severed head of Dr. Carl Hill.

Everyone knows Ghostbusters, can't go wrong with it. The untitled Ghostbusters 4 was supposed to come out this year, but I think the strikes delayed it to next spring. Next year makes more sense anyway, since it will be the 40th anniversary of the original.

So, my little hometown (Sudbury) has a Horrorthon every year, so that was my entire weekend. It started with local promotor I'm friendly with as a birthday present for himself, just renting the theatre to show his favourites on the big screen, and he might as well sell tickets. It's now in its 7th year and has grown into three days, usually with a few UK premiers.

If you count shorts, there's my 31 with a few to spare.

Movie highlights were Train to Busan, The Haunting, How to Kill Monsters, Lore, The Pocket Book of Superstitions, and The Moor.

From the shorts I'd recommend Dead Enders, Knock Knock (Knock), Nun With A Chainsaw, The Smile, The Unquiet dead, and We Forgot About the Zombies.

    Here's the full list: https://www.deadandsudburied.co.uk/schedule.html

In the unlikely event anyone on here lives nearby, join us next year! It's like £35 for the whole weekend pass.
"Has Sariel summoned you here, Azrael? Have you come to witness the miracle of your brethren arriving on Earth?"

"I WILL MIX THE ASHES OF YOUR BONES WITH SALT AND USE THEM TO ENSURE THE EARTH THE TEMPLARS TILLED NEVER BEARS FRUIT AGAIN!"

"*sigh* I hoped it was for the miracle."

Dan Watters' Azrael was incredible, a constant delight and perhaps too good for this world (but not the Forth). For the love of St. Dumas, DC, give us more!!!

    No. 23: Firestarter (1984)

As youths, Andy McGee and his future wife, Vicky, participated in secret experiments, allowing themselves to be subjected to mysterious medical tests. Years later, the couple’s daughter, Charlie, begins to exhibit the ability of setting fires solely with her mind. This volatile talent makes the youngster extremely dangerous and soon she becomes a target for the enigmatic agency known as “The Shop.”

So the Old Man in the movie is awesome, He's all like "The government is after you? I got your back let me get my gun". This movie is also where I get my mistrust in old dudes with pony tails.

Never saw this before. Delightful stop motion animated movie. Victor Frankenstein is a boy who brings his beloved dog back, complications ensue when other kids find out about it. I'm shocked that Burton got Disney to release the movie in black and white. Lots of nods to classic horror films, but also a few newer ones. The setting is New Holland, a town full of people who look like they belong in gothic movies. I chuckled when I realized the young Winona Ryder type was voiced by Winona Ryder.

I definitely saw this TV Special as a kid, I was big on Garfield. I probably read the book, too. But I only remembered a few bits here and there. I hadn't really thought about but then I saw the Cinnemassacre on YouTube put out a vid about it. Garfield goes trick-or-treating and has a spooky adventure, simple. There's three quick songs that are catchy enough.

I didn't even know this live action short existed. What was it for? It's easy to forget now, but in the 80s Disney was much more experimental than they are known for now. Shelly Duvall and Daniel Stern play the parents, who get a bit more focus than in the feature. It's also set in California rather than a stylized town. It's basically the same beginning and ending as the animated film. People freaking out over the dog doesn't really work in this context, as it's just a small dog running across a yard, you would barely even notice the stiches.

At this point I'm aiming to beat my total of 103 movies from the 2021 marathon, and with 6 more days and 16 to tie the chances are looking pretty good.

    82. Bride Of Reanimator (1990) - Herbert West inexplicably returns after the events of the first movie, along with his partner in ethically questionable medical experimentation, Dr. Dan Cain, neither man seemingly suffering any repercussions for their actions and resuming their jobs at Miskatonic University Hospital as though nothing had happened. After realizing his reanimating agent is capable of reanimating individual body parts, and discovering Dan's fiancée's still intact heart in storage at the university, West hatches a plan to recreate her from body parts of various dead women. The sequel fully leans into the Frankenstein's monster premise hinted at in the first, while also pushing the comedy more towards the surface. The severed head of Dr. Hill is also back, now with bat wings!

    83. Hereditary (2018)- Ari Aster's feature debut, the film concerns a family who, after the death of their secretive grandmother, are haunted by a mysterious presence which has targeted their two children for a nefarious purpose. I often feel like I'm in the minority of people who prefer this over Midsommar, for me Hereditary hits a lot of the elements I love when it comes to slow burn horror.

    84. Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth (1992) - Third movie in the Hellraiser franchise, and marks the beginning of the decline of an otherwise promising series, though it was the second-highest-grossing film in the entire franchise. It has its moments, and Doug Bradley as Pinhead is responsible for the vast majority of those, unfortunately a lot of the movie feels pieced together from disparate parts which don't always combine to make a satisfying whole.

    85. Vampyres (1974) - The movie opens with two female lovers murdered and then somehow resurrected as vampires offscreen during the opening credits, they then lure travelers along a country road back to their estate where they have sex and kill them while drinking their blood, disposing of the bodies in staged automobile accidents. Loaded with the standard gothic horror imagery of creepy woods, perpetually overcast and dreary skies, abandoned graveyards, and dilapidated English manors, the film also features a load of nudity and a surprising amount of blood for the mid 70s.

    86. The Devil's Rain (1975) - This movie tends to get a lot of negativity thrown at it, but I find it a lot more entertaining and re-watchable than countless other movies I've seen. Apparently it was a feature fim, but it plays more like a made-for-tv movie, and imagining it as such is probably where my enjoyment lies, because I could certainly see it being tedious on the big screen. Tubi blurb: "When a cult leader is burnt alive by the local church, he vows to return and enslave the souls of the congregation’s heirs in a pact with Satan." Worth a watch to see Ernest Borgnine play the head of a satanic cult and get done up in goat-face and horns. Couple of additional fun facts: it's credited as John Travolta's film debut (in a minor, bit part), and Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey is credited as technical advisor and also has a minor role in the movie as one of the cultists.

    87. Halloween Kills (2021) - A continuation of events from the 2018 (along with flashbacks to Halloween 1978), featuring the much maligned tagline "evil dies tonight", which is understandable with the lynch mob/rock festival crowd crowd chanting it as they pursue the wrong escaped mental patient through the hospital, a low point in the movie, though thankfully short. This was my second viewing and I felt like at least 15 minutes could have been cut to give it a tighter 90 minute run time while still hitting all the same beats as the current film.

Back to the grindstone, and what a movie to come back to. The Italians do not screw around, and that demon makeup legit scares the hell out of me.

In the first movie, demons came out of the movie screen and attack everyone in the theater. In this one they come out of a TV set and attack everyone in a high-rise apartment building, where the residents are locked in for some unrelated reason. I liked this better than I did the first one (which was also good). Better scares, better characters.

    16. House of Secrets (1936). A man inherits a house with a big secret. Intriguing film but ultimately pretty forgettable just because of how far-fetched the entire central mystery ends up being when all is revealed. Could have. Should have done better.

    17. The Monster Walks (1932). A young woman set to inherit a mansion finds it difficult to survive the experience. While the story is decent, it is racist and bigoted film in the way it depicts the one black guy, a servant of course, and the other "help" at the estate. I mean, its just embarrassing that Hollywood once made movies like this one.

    18. Blood Hook (1986). Cult film about a murderer who slays his victims with a giant fishing lure in the midst of a muskie tournament. You can't make this stuff up. Like all Troma films, it takes its own schlock so seriously that its hard not to be entertained even when the subject matter is beyond ridiculous. Definitely recommended!

    19. The Beast with a Million Eyes (1955). Out in the desert, an alien is trying to control mankind one species at a time. Terrible film with terrible acting, awful "special effects" and a dumb plot. This might be the worst horror film I have ever seen.

    20. Witchcraft (1964). A beautiful witch is accidentally brought back to life, and begins to take revenge on a rival family that was responsible for imprisoning her. Low budget movie but it didn't really show badly, since they didn't try and stretch the budget - it was mostly the same few sets and no real special effects. The plot was really good and the movie was fairly riveting.

    21. The Ghost (1963). A woman and her lover plot the death of her husband, but he turns the tables on them both. A great Barbara Steele movie with fairly twisty and turny plot and a dismally gruesome and depraved ending for all.

    22. Fall of the House of Usher (1960). A man comes to pick up his bride at her family estate and finds the entire family and estate is doomed. A decent retelling of the Poe story, by Corman with his legendary and lusciously colorful style, wonderful settings and great watchability.

    23. Gallery of Horror (1967). Collection of short horror stories, each with a twist at the end. Uneven quality for the stories with some of the acting very wooden. Purely forgettable nonsense for the most part, but there are a couple of gems in here.

    24. The Lost Boys (1987). Family moves to Santa Carla and finds themselves having to fight off a vampire coven. Great characters and lines, and the best movie by the Two Cories. Its a classic in every sense, I know practically every line and scene quite well. Plus it reminds me of growing up in the Bay Area and visiting Santa Cruz. The scenes are like a scrapbook for me of a time gone by.

On the run from the law, a group of criminal lowlife led by Hawk (the slayer), hold up in the mansion of a carnival magician they've grabbed as a hostage.

More unfortunately, this is by-the-numbers stuff. And it has little to actually do with any Lovecraft story so far as I know. "Cthulhu" is on the name of a book and above the gates, that is all. This could just as well be called Demon Mansion or Haunted Mansion (the other one). The movie takes too long to have things really get going. The backstory could be intriguing but it's barely explored.

A futuristic deep sea mining station in the Mariana Trench is rocked by a sudden disaster. As a group of survivors try to make it to saftey, it becomes clear that there's something deadly in the water. The movie makes a deliberate choice to forgo the usual opening act of introduction and jump straight into the action. It's not an entirely wise choice but it is commendable for being different. The production values are almost all quite good. Kristen Stewart gives a good performance, but I wonder if someone more naturally charismatic and likeable pwuld have been better, given how the movie starts. Someone like Sandra Bullock, who you automatically are pulling for in Gravity

This movie will likely being to mind 90s undersea horrors like Levitathan and Deepstar 6. This is very much like a modern version of those, with a fun spin o nrhr scenario.
It's better to not Google anything about this, if you udont already know and you are planning to check it out. It's not a classic, but it's noteworthy. I first saw this early during Covid. It's held up well at least that long.
