30. Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972). Theater troupe goes on a field trip to a cemetery at night, "pretends" to cast a spell raising the dead, and gets eaten by zombies. Karma at its best. Shot on a budget of $50,000 and with some acting that puts the ham in hammy, it nevertheless is a brilliant cult film that features claustrophobic cinematography, a horrifying soundtrack and excellent pacing. The bad zombie make up aside, I always enjoy watching this film and its one of the more terrifying zombie films in my opinion. I think its also the earliest movie I've seen where they show a gay couple, calling them a gay couple, and treat them completely like normal people. There is a scene where the main guy, Alan, tosses the final girl into a pack of zombies to buy himself time. Made funny by the fact that the girl was the actor's real life wife.

As another aside, the director of this movie went on to direct A Christmas Story and Porky's.

    108. Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) - I've known about this film for nearly three decades, and seen numerous clips and stills, as well as read a number of reviews, during that time, but this is surprisingly the first time I've actually sat down and watched the entire thing. From Wikipedia: "The film centers around an unnamed Japanese salaryman who wakes up to find pieces of metal sprouting from various parts of his body and becomes haunted by visions of metal-oriented sexual fantasies. As the man steadily becomes a hybrid of man and machine, he develops a connection with a victim from a hit-and-run accident, who is undergoing a similar transformation."

    109. The Ring (2002) - US remake of the Japanese film Ringu, and essentially kick-started the J-Horror remake craze of the early 2000s. From IMDB: "A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it."

Did you know Brian de Palma made a musical?! as you might guess from the title, its a spoof of The Phantom of the Opera, though there's very little phantoming here until the second half or so. And there's an outright villain I sleazy Faustian music producer, who might be based on Phil Spectre. If the filmmakers only knew at the time...

I liked the music more often than not. But I ended up not liking any of the characters. The comedy has an almost Mel Brooks vibe...but de Palma ain't no Mel Brooks. He does have a knack for visual flourishes though. The first from the original Supsiria can really sing.

What this reminded me of the most is a better version (in every way) of Cannon Films' The Apple. But it doesn't have the charm that made Rocky Horror such a cult hit.

Little Norman sees and talks to ghosts, but no one believes him. On the anniversary of a witch-hanging from centuries ago, it's up to him to stop a curse from destroying the town. Stop-motion animation from Laika. More adult than any modern Disney stuff that I'm aware of. The closest thing to this would be Frankenweenie and this a bit darker than that.

Final day! And though I didn't plan it this way, everything was a first-time watch for me.

31a. The House on Coffin Brook Road (2023) - Youtube

A short film by the Secret Galaxy (formerly Toy Galaxy) Youtube channel, loosely based on the game Clue. Hopefully they had fun making it. Personally, I found the channel's video about the history of the actual Clue game more entertaining.

31b. Rasputin the Mad Monk (1966) - TCM

I tend to put off the Hammer movies that don't have actual monsters or supernatural threats, but this one is worth it for Christopher Lee. It sure was something to see this side of him; usually he's usually so reserved and classy, whether he's playing the hero or the villain. Here's he's a loud and boisterous thug, and he does a great job.

    31c. Suspiria (1977) - TCM

I saw the 2018 Suspiria first, and really liked it. This one, I've seen and read it being discussed and dissected for years, to the point where I didn't think actually seeing it would add much more to the experience. And I was kinda right. Like all the Italian horror I've seen, this was very pretty and atmospheric, but neither of those qualities stay with me for very long once the movie's over. And all the best kills/scares have already been burned into my memory long ago.

    31d. The Awakening (1980) - TCM

This is the third film adaptation of a Bram Stoker story called "Jewel of the Seven Stars". I've seen the Hammer version several times, and I manage to forget every single frame of it the second the end credits appear, every time. This one will likely fare better in my memory, if for no other reason than the presence of Charlton Heston. Plus, Emperor Palpatine getting murdered by a mummy.

    31e. Connect 4 (2023) - Youtube

Another short film, this time by Youtube channel RDCworld1. And, by a weird coincidence, it also has to do with some old game. This one was actually quite good and creepy.

    31. Halloween II (1981). Michael Meyers continues to hunt Laurie Strode and fails. This was a good way to end the movie month for me. The movie gets a lot of criticism just because it is so shallow and random plotwise, and doesn't really invest people into its characters. Its just a screamin' rampage the likes of which we don't see again in the franchise until Halloween Kills. Funny how they returned to that "formula" so many years later. Michael Myers was very scary and the chaos of all the police and Loomis working on trying to find him, plus the night shift at the hospital was a very creepy setting. As many know, the plan was for this to end the saga of Michael and Laurie and for the other movies to be more of an anthology. So plotwise they just threw in a bunch of new stuff. But the anthology idea failed and people really wanted more Michael. The problem was that this movie dug such a deep hole with its characters that no one knew where to go from there when it came time to do more Michael Meyers stuff, so we got the clown girl stuff for three movies, a little random Strode action, a reboot and finally a three boot. As a pair of movies, though, the original Halloween and Halloween II work for me as a set. Everything about Halloween II is great for me, its like my own personal cult film.

Happy Halloween movie month all you ghosts and ghouls!

Got in at around 5:30 this morning after visiting friends for Halloween (missed it last year after getting sick on Halloween day, no idea what it was, both Covid and flu tests were negative) and went straight to bed after taking care of a couple of chores, but did get one more movie in, Trick r Treat, before the end of the month (the other we watched, The Fog, I'd already seen earlier in October).

    110. Trick R Treat (2007) - Halloween themed anthology comprised of four overlapping, nonlinear stories detailing events which occur in the fictional town of Warren Valley, Ohio on October 31st. Directorial debut of Michael Dougherty, the film strikes a balance of being borderline family friendly while delving into some fairly dark and macabre content, and has managed to become a Halloween classic for many.

Comedic action-horror. It's basically Five Nights, clearly inspired by the game. Animateonics coem to life in a dilapidated kids-party restaurant at night. But this time, they messed with the wrong man/myth/legend.

It's a fine amusement but not great. At around 90 minutes, it still feels like they had to stretch it, there's so little meat to it. Some teens break into the place to complicate matters, but the script seemingly forgets that they were supposed to know all about the dangers. Aiddenly they're acting like they don't believe in any of it. I suspect a rewrite/reshoot that wasn't patched in well.

Cage never actually speaks. I think the movie could be a stealth sequel to Drive Angry. Or, Cage implying himself, a d he doesn't talk because he's so passed thst nobody in this hick town recognizes him.

So it took a while but they finally made an official movie based the successful game series. And it looks like it's big horror hit. This movie is more serious than the Cafe one, bit also geared for a younger audience, being PG-13 horror. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I,think that's about where the games are, based on my passing familiarity with them. It has excellent production value and the performances are good. I wasn't blown away but I can see why the target audience would be very happy with it.

I remember the VHS box for this used to Creep my put when I saw it in the store as a little kid. It's an anthology, John Carpenter produces, plays a crypt-keeper esque host and directs two segments, while Tobe Hooper does one. Nothing against Hooper, but it's weird that we ended up with *mostly* a Carpenter movie. The other alternative e woudl be to have different people do each segment; Wes Craven, Roger Coreman, and Sam Raimi all have cameos, one of them would have been nice.

Thr first story is about a woman working at a gas station alone late night (near Haddonfield!) menaced by strangers.

The second is about is a comedic tale Stacy Keach trying an experimental hair growth formula. I think kthis was the weakest entry, though not for lack of effort on Keach's part.

The third is Mark Hamill getting an experimental eye transplant, and it's the Dame idea as Hands of the Ripper or Body Parts.

Overall, not a bad watch, but no match for stronger anthology movies like Creepshow or Trick 'r Treat.

    https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/...2NzYx._V1_.jpg

Another anthology, this time with 11 stories by different filmmakers. They all take place in the same Calofornia town one Halloween, so the vibe is more than a little Trick 'r Treat, but there's not much connection. I think the segments should have been re-ordered so we don't get get three in a row involving murderous little kids. Thr last segment looks like it's going to have a wild and crazy finale but then it just ends. One segment felt like thr bloodiest SNL sketch ever.

I watched it once a few years back. I had forgotten enough that I figured it was worth revisting. Not bad...but it really makes me wish that Trick 'r Treat 2 would finally claw its way out of Development Hell.

I also started watching An Evening of Edgar Allen Poe (1970), starring Vincent Price. But it was late, I fell asleep and didn't finish it until morning, so I'm not counting it. I had really meant to watch the producers cut of Halloween 6, and the remake of The Blob at some point. I just didn't get around to them, but I'll probably watch both in the coming days.

    My Random Awards:

Best New to Me: Tie- Frankenweenie (2012) and The Invisible Man (2020)

Worst Movie: Children of the Night

    Returning Favorite: Army of Darkness

    Best Giant Creature:
Great Cthulhu
- Underwater

Strongest Chin: Robert Z'Dar - Maniac Cop trilogy (Runners up - Batman, Bruce Campbell)

Best Song: Ghostbusters Theme by Ray Parker Jr.
