    8/10
I like Abbott and Costello a lot, but long-form naratives are not the best fit for them. The best scenes in their movies are the ones that could be removed completely and placed into a variety or sketch show.

    28. Dawn of the Dead (1978) - Theater

Back to the big screen for its 45th anniversary. Which is surprising, as I was under the impression the rights holder was a jerkoff about it, which is why the movie doesn't stream anywhere and there hasn't been a decent home media release in the US for years. But, whatever the reason, I was happy to see it.

Though it was the theatrical version, which means every so often my nerd-brain had to chime in with "Aw, that bit was great and they left it out".

    Head Hunter.jpg
    10/22: The Head Hunter
    Year: 2018
    Director: Jordan Downey
Online Synopsis: A medieval warrior's gruesome collection of heads is missing only one - the monster that killed his daughter years ago. (IMDb)
My Thoughts: If you're looking to see harrowing fights between man and beast, you're most likely going to be disappointed. A majority of this movie focuses on the main character in between each of his hunts, recovering, preparing, and grieving for his lost child. While I'm not the greatest fan of its ending, I liked this one.

This week, I pulled the theme "Witch".

    10/23: Witchfinder General
    Year: 1968
    Director: Michael Reeves
Online Synopsis: A young soldier seeks to put an end to the evils caused by a vicious witch-hunter when the latter terrorizes his fiancée and kills her uncle. (IMDb)
My Thoughts: Man, this one was just depressing.

    10/24: The Devonsville Terror
    Year: 1983
    Director: Ulli Lommel
Online Synopsis:Dr. Worley investigates a 300-year-old witch's curse in the New England town of Devonsville. Three liberated, assertive women move into town, which angers the bigoted, male-dominated town fathers. One of the women is a reincarnation of the witch, who proceeds to exact revenge on the town males. (IMDb)
My Thoughts: I can't really say this movie left much of an impression on me, aside from the climax.

    10/25: Cry of the Banshee
    Year: 1970
    Director: Gordon Hessler
Online Synopsis: In 1500s England, a cruel witch-hunting magistrate, who often tortures innocent villagers for his entertainment, runs afoul of a witch who conjures a banshee to kill the magistrate and his family. (IMDb)
My Thoughts: Man, Vincent Price just can't help himself. I would consider this the better version of Witchfinder General, although not as depressing in the end.

    10/26: Black Sunday
    Year: 1960
    Director: Mario Bava
Online Synopsis: A vengeful witch and her fiendish servant return from the grave and begin a bloody campaign to possess the body of the witch's beautiful look-alike descendant. (IMDb)
My Thoughts: Although a bit confused with the mention of some very unvampiric vampires, this movie was really atmospheric. A great example of good, gothic horror.

    10/27: The Appearance
    Year: 2018
    Director: Kurt Knight
Online Synopsis: When a medieval monk unexpectedly dies in a horrific way, the Church sends Mateho the Inquisitor, a rational man of science, to investigate the alleged 'witch'. When Mateho himself becomes implicated as more monks die mysteriously, he must learn that science cannot explain the horrors around him, before he is seduced by the evil that haunts this monastery. (IMDb)
My Thoughts: This movie was a bit half and half. I get that they were trying to build up intrigue of "is the Abbott or the girl evil?" in the first hour, but it just felt boring; however, once the movie gets into the second half and we start getting answers, I started to really enjoy this. Maybe watching it while extremely tired colored my perspective, so perhaps a rewatch later on is in order.

    91izds-iD3L._AC_SL1500_.jpg
    10/28: Videodrome
    Year: 1983
    Director: David Cronenberg
Online Synopsis: A programmer at a TV station that specializes in adult entertainment searches for the producers of a dangerous and bizarre broadcast. (IMDb)
My Thoughts: Man, I can't believe it took me this long to finally watch this one. It's got retro tech, it's sleazy, has plenty of body horror, it's thought provoking, and, above all else, it's batshit insane, and I love it.

From people who saw Get Out once. Only instead of a wild, memorable twist, this is just standard and predictable vamp stuff. Instead of exploring particular theme/issue via a horror scenario, this just throws in elements of various issues but isn't really about any of them. Race, class, sexism, British vs American culture... just kinda name-dropped. At one point, I thought "oh, this must be a dream sequence because what's happening is way too obvious and sudden..." nope. The movie just aggressively avoids ever doing anything a bit clever or subtle.

the story follows a young struggling artist who accepts a wedding invite from her newly discovered super rich family in England. She's romanced by the super handsome lord of the manor, but there's some ominous stuff going on...but as soon as she arrives and they say the name of the place, you'll probably know what's going on.

Nathalie Emmanuel is one of the most beautiful women on Earth, but I could hear her fighting with the American accent in all her scenes. The narrative would have been more focused if she was simply a British commoner. I don't think anyone will buy her immediate decision to go by herself on to England to attend a posh wedding of people she's never met, 5 minutes after meeting her cousin. And that comes down to the script, because you easily could have had her know the cousin for a while first. Sean Pertwee is a mean butler. The guy who plays the lord looks a lot like a young Sean Connery.

The cinematography, production design, and cast are good. It's the writing and overall direction that are weak.

I was shocked a couple weeks ago when I realized this movie is now 20 years old! But alas, still no sequel. I won't say it's the best werewolf movie ever made, but it is my personal favorite to watch. Lots of an action and dark, irreverent humor. I still don't know what a lot of the British slang the soldiers use means, but it's fun to hear them say.

Finally beat my 2021 total, and with 2 days to spare, so likely a few more to add before the month is over.

    102. Night Of The Demons (1988) - During a Halloween party at an abandoned morgue built atop an indian burial mound, a group of high school kids unwittingly release a demonic entity which possesses some and murders the rest. Will anyone survive 'til daybreak? Low budget affair with effects to match, though still fun and entertaining despite its shortcomings and has developed a cult following over the years.

    103. Sleepy Hollow (1999) - I've always loved the visuals of this film, and its grey, moody atmosphere, really puts me into a spooky, autumn frame of mind, it's a defnite Halloween season tradition.. I have friends who are long time Tim Burton fans, so Sleepy Hollow is another movie I'm guaranteed to see at least once this time of year. I tend to remember a lot of complaints about it not being faithful to the original Washington Irving story at the time the film was released, though I'm generally ok with the liberties taken, it was, after all, a movie adaptation and never purported to be a faithful retelling.

    104. Halloween (1978) - The classic masked slasher flick that is credited with giving birth to the modern horror genre. Sure, it didn't arise in a vacuum, and there are predecessors just as worthy, with 1974's Black Christmas being a particularly noteworthy standout, Carpenter even seems to have lifted many elements from the previous film, but, for a variety of reasons, Halloween hit at just the right time to make an indelible impression on the public consciousness. Locked away in a mental institution as a child after viciously stabbing his sister to death on Halloween night, Michael Myers escapes 15 years later and returns to terrorize the town of Haddonfield. Christopher Lee was approached for the part of Dr, Samuel Loomis, which he declined and later stated was one of the biggest regrets of his career. I have a hard time even picturing Lee as Loomis, I think it would have changed the tone and dynamic of a good portion of the film (and franchise had he accepted and returned), Donald Pleasence was just so perfect in the role.

    28. Witchfinder General (1968). A decently compelling story about witchhunting in England during the English Civil War. Unlike the other one I saw, Cry of the Banshee, the plot is coherent and there are both clear heroes and clear villains. So we get to see consequences play out on both sides. An obscure cult film now, mostly due to the fact that the director died at a very young age soon after the film was released, but also due to the violent ending that leaves things hanging. American versions title the film "The Conquering Worm" and try to tie it in to Poe by quoting the poem, even though you'd have to squint very hard to see any relation between the poem and the story. Is it historically accurate? Not really except in a couple of very broad strokes.

    29. The Monkey's Paw (1948). A suitably creepy tale about a magical Monkey's Paw that grants wishes but costs a sinister price. Each time someone makes a wish on the paw, it does get granted, but someone dies or there is another tragedy. The movie is a pretty good adaptation of the short story its based on, which is a theme that harkens back to the story of Aladdin and, way before that, the Odyssey and Gilgamesh. The concept here plays out in a host of more recent films including Pet Sematary and the Re-Animator series of movies, plus the Final Destination series. I find these to be interesting just because of the concept that nothing is free in this world.

    No. 25: Cujo (1983)

A friendly St. Bernard named “Cujo” contracts rabies and conducts a reign of terror on a small American town.

Before there was COVID this is the reason people feared bats. The slow death from staying in a hot car or being mauled to death by an very large insane dog is not the best of circumstances. The real downside to the movie is people started naming their chihuahuas Cujo thinking they were clever.

    No. 26: Christine (1983)

Geeky student Arnie Cunningham falls for Christine, a rusty 1958 Plymouth Fury, and becomes obsessed with restoring the classic automobile to her former glory. As the car changes, so does Arnie, whose newfound confidence turns to arrogance behind the wheel of his exotic beauty. Arnie’s girlfriend Leigh and best friend Dennis reach out to him, only to be met by a Fury like no other.

One of my all time favorites for personal reason (was the first King book I ever read and also the first King adaptation I saw) both made me a fan for life. Throw in that its a Carpenter film and he did the music I'm all in all the time. I would make a funny remark but I drive in a car every day and I don't what it mad at me.

No. 27: Children of the Corn (1984)

A boy preacher named Isaac goes to a town in Nebraska called Gatlin and gets all the children to murder every adult in town

So that Linda Hamilton dance at the beginning, I rewatch the movie just for that. This movie make be question the subsidies that go to farming. Is my tax dollars funding child corn cults?

No. 28: Riding the Bullet (2004).

In 1969, while studying at the University of Maine, artist Alan Parker becomes obsessed with death. Believing he is losing his girlfriend, he tries to commit suicide on his birthday but his friends manage to stop him. He receives news that his mother has had a stroke and decides to hitchhike to visit her at the hospital.

Would you get in a car with David Arquette? I don't know if I would or not I mean the pro's and con's of the ordeal are pretty much equal.

    No. 29: Carrie (1976)

Carrie White, a shy and troubled teenage girl who is tormented by her high school peers and her fanatically religious mother, begins to use her powers of telekinesis to exact revenge upon them

The OG, The Granddaddy, the one that started it all, the first of many Stephen King Films and Directed by Brian De Palma with John Travolta to boot. The only thing that took away from this is Adam Sandler skit he did "They're All Gonna Laugh at You!" when I hear that line in the movie I laugh every time.

    October 29th. 45- The Lost Boys (1987) 46- Cold Hearts (1999)

I end up watching this once a year. Sometimes in the summer, because it has that vibe. But it's a go-to vampire flick for me.

Story goes that this script began as a proposed sequel/spinoff to Lost Boys. That comes across with the boardwalk setting and the small gang of vamps. But the script makes the mistake of actually having someone call them out as looking like they're from the famous movie...big mistake. NEVER directly reference a better movie in your same genre like that! At least the story isn't a copy, as this isn't about vampire recruitment at all. Joel Schumacher wanted to do a 'Lost Girls' movie at some point, but this doesn't seem to be quite that.

I'm guessing that when the movie finally got developed on its own they ended up with way less budget. This has a very indie-film feel. A lot of Gen Xers talking, but not really saying much. The female lead talks about feeling stuck in town...but she has no reason to be. This came out in 1999 but feels like it's from a few years earlier. The music (which there isn't enough of) and fashions are more grunge. Probably the best part of the movie was the end credits when "Stuck on You" plays, it seems like the ending of a better movie than the one you actually just saw.

I'd only check this out if you're really curious as to what a 90s Lost Boys sequel might have resembled.

As I recall, the original story is quite short and wouldn't lend itself to film if directly adapted. The Disney cartoon actually covered it fairly well.

. Sure, it didn't arise in a vacuum, and there are predecessors just as worthy, with 1974's Black Christmas being a particularly noteworthy standout,
I think Black Christmas and The Town That Dreaded Sundown were the two biggest ingredients.

It's an unusual case where Lee's height and voice would have made him wrong for the role in a horror movie.

    32.) One Million Years B.C. (1966) (US-CUT)~ Blu-Ray!

There are 2 Versions of this movie I got in my Blu-Ray Set and they are indeed different from each other, the US one more cut than the International Version, so I saw both this year and while similar they have detail differences and story element differences, so I saw both.

    33.) One Million Years B.C. (1966) (International Cut) ~ Blu-Ray!

Like I said with the US Version, This International Version had more, 10 mins more to it and somewhere IMO important to have kept in so I found this international version the best of the 2 since it had all the movie in it.

Two more staples, in just under the wire this year. And two of my favorites, at that. Lugosi and Karloff both excel in roles that are the polar opposites of their most famous ones.

    105. Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988) - Cult classic movie about extraterrestrials that look like clowns who come to Earth to harvest humans for food, they arrive in a craft shaped like a circus big top tent and use an array of circus-themed tech and weapons. Cheesy, dumb fun, and apparently there have been multiple attempts at sequels, and even a television series, in the 35 years sincem none of which have come to fruition.

    106. Scarecrows (1988) - Independent direct-to-video production about a group of mercenaries who pull a heist, hijack a plane, and are forced to make an unscheduled landing in a remote. isolated field after one of their number double-cross them. They are then attacked and brutally killed one-by-one by creepy-looking scarecrows possessed by the spirits of Satanists who previously resided on the property. What it lacks in story, character development, and a mixed bag when it comes to acting, it more than makes up for in atmosphere.

    107. The Dead Don't Die (2019) - Absurdist zombie comedy from writer/director Jim Jarmusch about a small town police force dealing with the dead being reanimated due to a global, man-made catastrophe. I'm not really sure what to say about the movie, I enjoy it, but it's likely not a film that will satisfy most zombie fanatics, and is even divisive among Jarmusch fans.
