Default When did Beast Boy start looking uh, beastly?

When why how did Gar go from this…

    …to this?

Pretty sure he’s even had a tail at some point?
I mean as drawn by George Perez Gar had that Tom Selleck hairy chest going, whenever the NNT would hang out by the pool and whatnot, but the pointed ears, the claws, the fangs…was there a canon reason or was it just artists tweaking his look over time and editorial rolled w. it?

Probably something else we can blame on that damn cartoon!

pre-2000 comics had this too. Not universally though. But there was that weird arc where his power got corrupted and he could only turn into hideous monsters and not real animals.

Yeah, that was in New Titans in the early 90s.

The 2003 cartoon is what caused him to be constantly shown with pointy ears and fangs.

So it just started being done, no explanation? Interesting!

I’m not complaining, just surprised. Comics writers will usually explain things into the ground.

He’s was always really hairy and had those wicked sideburn back in the day, his frequent agedowns has meant reinventions of his appearances with the times. I’m fond of the latest. Youthful energy but very much a young man

The Young Justice cartoon had a cool take on this. He deliberately turned into a half-monkey as a kid as a way to hide his trauma.

When he grows up he stops doing that.

    ^^^Thanks for the feedback guys!

I gotta admit I’m not a fan of a feral looking Gar.

At least he’s not red anymore.

I think it started after the Amalgam days, when he was amalgamated with the (Marvel) Beast:

There is a big influence of that version on modern Gar, in my opinion.

Same here. I liked him as normal looking green guy, albeit a slightly hirsute one. Who didn't have an actual affinity of any sort with animals, just was able to take their forms. But I prefer old school on a number of heroes.

^^^Man, my two oldest kids were both under ten when that show debuted and LOVED IT. While neither became a comics reader they both still routinely ask how and what the characters are up to.

This definitely started at some point after the Teen Titans cartoon. Maybe even after the Young Justice cartoon. I prefer Gar looking more like a normal teen boy who happens to have green skin. Honestly considering how distinct Perez made Vic, Kory, Gar and Raven it's hard to deal with the modern versions of all of them. I can deal with Gar the best and Raven the least at this point.
