Default My 10 year old is interested in Star Trek, where do I start???

My son has shown interest in Star Trek, and he asked "can we watch it?", but I don't even know where to start! I watched some of the original Star Trek movies as a kid, having never seeing the original series. Then I watched TNG, and the movies that came out with that cast.

But with all the generations of crews, all the tv shows and movies, I don't know where a good place would be to start.

    Any ideas?

    Prodigy.

    Strange New Worlds.

    TNG.

    TOS

    Kelvin Universe movies.

    All good places.

My daughters started on Kelvin Universe movies, then TOS, Prodigy, SNW, and now TNG.

    Depends on your kid.

There's a general Trek thread in TV Films that might yield better results than here FWIW.

I'm imagining he must have seen a clip or ad for a specific series. Just figure out which one it was and start there. If he's not sure of the proper name, ask him which characters looked interesting to him and find out that way.

I'm old. I suggest starting in the beginning with the original TV series with Shatner. Then you can move on to the movies based on the original series and compare the interior of the Enterprise, the advances in special effects, etc.

The younger the child, the more likely they won't object to the cheesy effects. I don't know the 10 year old of the thread creator, so their mileage may vary.

Yeah, definitely from the earliest to the latest is the way I would go with the Star Trek universe. Same with the Star Wars movies, too (no, the '77 film is not the fourth in the series, regardless of what George Lucas says ).

FWIW, TOS was my favorite show from my childhood (though I only saw a portion of an episode while it was still on NBC).

TOS, Even if you don't get through the whole series, it's the foundation for everything else. For the movies I would skip STTMP and go to Trek II and III before moving on to TNG. (Though they have to see IV at some point too,)
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

    That's my take too.

Spock's Brain can certainly be bypassed among the episodes.

Well it depends on what sparked his interest in the first place, doesn't it? Whatever it was, I'd show him more of that kind of thing.

Unless its Star Trek V, Insurrection, etc. Then just show him Galaxy Quest instead.

I would also recommend Star Trek TOS and perhaps the animated series where most of the original cast also did the voice acting. Then go the the movies. Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: Search for Spock and everything else except Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

Agreed! The third season was when the budget for the show was severely cut. Most of the cast, esp. Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, have said things really went downhill that last season.

Even Shatner's toupee suffered that season.

I tried watching the 1960s series but it was too cheese and dated. The sacrifices we make for our children.

Gotta start with The Original Series where it all began, then work from there regarding Next Generation, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, the movies and so on.
