    Default Mutant Genesis Re-Read (October 1991-December 1997)

It’s the 60th Anniversary for the Avengers and the X-Men, and I’m going to do some throwback Thursday articles for Comic-Watch centered around this era. I began reading comics with this era, and while it’s not my favorite time on the books, I still have a great fondness for this time. If you’d like to join in feel free to follow along.

Peak Liefeld art for me. The concluding New Mutants issues and the first couple of X-Force ones had Rob at his most detailed and dynamic. It was still Liefeld so if you never liked his style it was just more of the same, but those were the issues when he showed more attention to detail, had interesting page compositions and some depth. The rest of his X-Force run and then Youngblood looked like they were phoned in in comparison.

I kinda sorta lied! I’m going to start at Acts of Vengeance, and then move on from there. With New Mutants it will start with the Rusty vs The Vulture fight (New Mutants #86), X-Factor with issue #50, and Uncanny #256. This is the point when the books started to coalesce as they march towards the Mutant Genesis!

With Wolverine I’ll start with issue #33, the beginning of the Larry Hama/Marc Silvestri run. Excalibur is tbd at this time.

Solid choice as that will include peak Claremont/Lee, which isn't really the Mutant Genesis proper but rather their Uncanny X-Men run that immediately preceded it.

I started with Uncanny #300 so I remember this era the fondest.
Your re-read ends at #350 with Lobdell's initial departure? I put the 'official' end of the 90s in 2001 with Lobdell's X-Men v2 #113, just before Grant Morrison's run began.

I think I’m going to start with the Crosstime Caper, then skip and pick up stories that were great, while skipping the detritus.

Agreed, but the stories feel like Claremont and the crew are setting the books up for the mutant genesis.

I chose that book as the cut-off because I’ve also got Avengers books to review for the site, and don’t want to burn myself out.

Yeah! The Cross-Time Caper is also an adequate starting-point (IMHO):
