I don't believe I have ever seen anybody actually wearing an ascot beyond the '70s and only in movies or on TV before 1980.

I.m a smoker and, i think they're cool.

Yeah, beyond the '70s they were rarer to find, but a lot more popular than an ascot.

If I wanted to gamble with the possibility of lung or throat cancer (not to mention emphysema), a pipe would have been my thing. I loved the smell of my grandfather's cherry tobacco when I was a kid.

Smoking on a pipe--of some kind--is as popular as ever. It's the kind of pipe and what's in it that may have changed. It seems like most of the cafés and restaurants have gone out of business to be replaced by storefronts that sell to that clientele in my neighbourhood.

I just assumed that was a deliberate reference to 1940's Bruce, and a metaphor for Robin breaking free of his traditional role in Batman's tropes.

Oh, that's the way I felt about it years ago, too, but you couldn't help feeling the anachronistic vibe going on.
