¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I prefer a variety of looks and definitely auburn highlights in the hair.

Purple eyes should be her definitive look, imo.
My personal pref is brown/dark brown hair but I think changing every now and again is okay.
So I don't know which way I should vote on the question...
“Look, you can’t put the Superman #77s with the #200s. They haven’t even discovered Red Kryptonite yet. And you can’t put the #98s with the #300s, Lori Lemaris hasn’t even been introduced.” — Sam
“Where the hell are you from? Krypton?” — Edgar Frog
I think Lois' utter lack of a definitive look works in her favor.
She can have long hair, medium hair, short hair, auburn hair, brunette hair, black hair, brown eyes, blue eyes, grey eyes, etc.
The only kinda consistent visual for Lois is that she is never tall (the more to contrast with Superman's massive size).
Dark hair and blue eyes was Lois's definitive look until the post Crisis reboot.
It still bothers me that Amy Adams played Lois as a redhead.
The introduction of her violet eyes in the 90s has been a great addition I prefer to keep, along with her classic dark hair. Hair style can vary.
I do think it's a plus in the visual medium of comics to be able to recognize the characters by their appearance, especially when it's a character who doesn't wear a costume.
If I were to choose a definitive look, it would be purple eyes and brown hair for comics and animated mediums. I'm more flexible for live-action.
Doesn't really matter, IMO. The time it would be most handy would be if you wanted to cosplay as Lois Lane and weren't cosplaying with a companion dressed as Superman. As a civilian in a superhero comic book, you are dependent upon a) being portrayed within the context of the titular superhero or b) having your name on the cover so everyone knows who you are and what kind of story the reader is reading. Bruce Wayne would be confused for any other 6'2", 210 lb, athletic, brunette, white man in a comic book without those contextual clues, too.
