Doing this essentially tells us Gunn wants to quietly bury the Batman verse once he’s able to but without losing Reeves. The Batman 2 and the Penguin show were too far along to do that immediately but this indicates a medium term plan unless those two projects are big successes.

Why not just make a Batman show?

Unless something has changed, I don't think they have the rights to make a Batman tv series. That and, yeah, overcrowding. There will be two Batmen on the big screen. No need for a third on TV.

I'm all for Gunn putting together a cohesive plan and starting fresh, but his 'Elseworlds' excuse just reeks of BS. It's Gunn covering for the fact that there are three upcoming projects (The Batman 2, Penguin, and Joker 2) that were too big or too far along to cancel. If he wanted to really embrace Elseworlds, he would have pushed to have Superman and Lois moved to HBO Max, and would have kept Stargirl instead of letting it get canceled.
