Bojack Horseman - definitely a mix of comedy and drama, but it got more dramatic as the show went on and while it was always funny, the dramatic parts got really serious.

There's always Pantheon. Their mistake was going on AMC+.

Not sure how serious you would consider it but enjoyed AVENGERS:EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES. They were going to do their version of SECRET INVASION when it was, unfortunately canceled.

Probably the first serious cartoon I saw was ROBOTECH. It aired for a brief time in my area and even to this day a lot of folks still have never heard of it!

it's now going by its real name Macross. Back in the 80s, Harmony Gold would take Super Dimension Fortress Macross and retitle it Robotech but needed more EP according to FCC regulations. So they Strip two more Japanese anime unrelated to Macross but done mostly by the same animator, called Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA. But then Harmony Gold a US production company, decided to sue anyone that tried to bring the original Macross and its real sequels and continue other TV shows into the US.

But thankfully all that has changed, and the current Japanese right holders of Macross in an International court won their case to bring Macross here in the US. There was even an odd case of FASA Corporation trying to take Playmates to court over an Exosquad toy looking too much like a Battletech toy. It was a mess and FASA loss. And not forgetting everyone thought Exosquad was owned by Playmates when in reality, Universal Animation Studios owned Exosquad. Even the US Patent Office, thinks so. But anyway, it led Harmony Gold to sue FASA.

FASA is gone replaced by Catalyst Game Labs now, and Harmony Gold will hopefully close forever soon. Oh, Universal Animation Studios is gone as well
    replace by DreamWorks Animation.

Robotech is one of the few animated shows from the 80s that stands up, in my opinion. (The Ralph Bakshi Mighty Mouse also does.)

It's painfully obvious as an adult just how much most of those shows were 30-minute toy commercials.

Don't think the Macross thing is quite sorted out entirely.

While it fixes certain issues with the later Macross series, I think there's still issues with the original Macross and it's characters who were used for ROBOTECH. So a modern release of the original series (although ADV was able to get one done on DVD a while back) the movie: Macross, DYRL, the OAV/music video Macross Flashback etc. are still out of luck. Especially since DYRL has never had a proper English release, just an odd international dub and a badly edited VHS version released by FHE, "Clash of the Bionoids".

Macross Plus and some of the Macross Delta or Frontier stuff got some theatrical releases in the US lately but I'm not sure about streaming or other home media yet.

Kind of wondering where this puts Macross 7, since it features a few characters from the original (and one of the main characters is their daughter).
