Are we sure Waid is stepping away from Shazam for good and Campbell isn’t simply doing a filler issue/arc? If he’s leaving I wager it’s because he’s either

1. Doing more World’s Finest books
2. Taking over Action Comics next year full time
3. Doing an Ultimate book in Snyder’s line if that is real

Fourth option is that sales aren't good enough to justify Waid/Mora on it.

Considering he doesn't prefer a married Superman, that actually makes sense. There was only so much he can write around that with Clark's current status quo.

It never ceases to amuse me how he literally created his own corner in DC, set in the past, so he won't have to deal with modern status quo.

Possible, Shazam II flopped so I doubt there’s much interest or demand in a Shazam comic at the moment. I dropped the series after a couple issues myself, it was fine but it didn’t hook me. But if sales were the issue wouldn’t they just cancel it? Putting Campbell on isn’t going to raise sales.

Well, it might be the way for him to get Superman ongoing he wanted, but couldn't get.

He did Birthright, I don’t know if he would want to do another Superman reboot. He did reboot Legion twice though… eh I think Snyder is going to be the one to do Ultimate Superman.

With World’s Finest he’s found a workaround for the marriage, only big thing he can’t do is kill the Kents. Also this might be a hot take but Waid is a terrible fit for an Ultimate line. Ultimate is all about modernization, Waid is all about retro throwbacks.

Wouldn't be first time we get a new creative team for an ongoing and it gets axed few issues later.

And well, Campbell is likely getting paid way less than Waid so if sales don't drop much then it suddenly might become profitable.

According to ICv2 none of the issues after 2 (which barely made it) have ranked in the top 50. I know the site isn't 100%, but that is still not great for a team such as Waid/Mora and knight terrors didn't help I would imagine.

I think Bleeding Cool did an article on this last year when it popped up, trademark applies to multiple things beyond comics if I remember correctly.
