If memory serves me right her first name isn't particular accurate to her cultural backround either.

Comic writers in the 70's and 80's weren't under much pressure to get foreign naming right for their audience, nor did the general audience care. So if it sounds vaguely foreign or matching it was used.

Its Rasputina. Slavic surnames for females (depending on the country) end with -a, -va, -ska. Marvel didn't pay attention and didn't correct the mistake.

It looks like Magik is going to be in at least 1 episode of the X-Men 97 cartoon revival. They've released images from an episode where Jubilee is supposed to be trapped in a videogame and one of the characters shown is Illyana in her original New Mutant uniform. No word on whether this means she'll actually be Magik in the show or if it's just in this virtual reality, though if it's just in the VR that raises the question of how such a videogame version of her would be created in the first place.
