Default Cover Contest 1/3-1/9/24 "They're my Favorite"

Welcome to the first contest starting in 2024. Happy New Year Everybody. Let's hope it's another year filled with great comic covers. I love seeing a vast array of different covers in these contests, so I am going to use a pretty broad topic to start us off this year. I like when the topic allows the posters to reveal a bit of their tastes rather than having to pick something in a pigeonhole that may not reflect what they love about comics.

So, this Week: "They're My Favorite"

Post a cover featuring the work of your favorite artist. Please identify the artist for everyone's benefit. Bonus points if it features one of your favorite characters.

My entry: Joe Kubert doing a Conan variant cover...

The Rules: Have fun and be nice to each other.

    The Logistics:
    1) Post One (& ONLY ONE) Cover that fits the theme of this Week's Contest!
    2) Cover must be from a Published Comic Book or Collected Volume!
    3) Covers must be Posted before Voting Begins!
    4) Voting Begins 12 AM Tuesday and Runs Until 12 AM Wednesday PST (3 AM EST)!
    5) Vote by Posting the name in BOLD of the Poster whose cover best fits the theme or that you simply like the most! A vote need not be in bold, but it does make it easier to Count-The-Votes!
    6) The Winner of the Contest is the Entry with the MOST Votes after the Voting-Period!
    7) It's Okay to Discuss the Covers but if you Think Someone's Entry Doesn't Fit the Theme or Violates the Rules, you Don't need to Argue it in the thread, Simply Don't Vote for It!
    8) Plus: Occasionally Voting will Result in a Tie! The Person Who Started the Thread will do the Counting that Week will Usually call for a TIE-Breaking --Vote from Someone who has Not Yet Voted!
    9) AFTER the Tie-Breaker Vote, Voting Ends and the Winner is Declared by The One Who Started the Thread (or another volunteer surrogate). Winner picks the new topic.

Comic fans get the comics their buying habits deserve.

One of my favourite artists is Jim Lee, Banshee's one of my favourite X-Men, and the team's wearing my favourite group uniforms!

As most folks here well know, I'm a longtime Archie Comics fan, and my favorite artist is Dan DeCarlo! Here's one of my all time favorite covers of his with Betty wearing jeans so damn tight, they look like they had been painted on! YOWZA!

Confession, I don't have any ONE favorite artist, but there are a few that I like more than others. It may take some time to make a decision.

Going with Ross "The Boss" Andru and his New York specific backgrounds. This is Radio City Music Hall. He used to go around the City taking photos to then use in his art. At this point, over 40 years later, these serve as a sort of snapshot in time.

You are my yellow, you are my green
The most beautiful brown I've ever seen
You are my black, you are my white
You're every color that writes on my life

You are my silver, you are my gold
You are the reason I wanna get old
You are my turquoise, my red, and my jade
    You are my favorite

I don't have an absolute favourite artist, but George Perez's work on New Teen Titans is a huge part of what cemented me as a comics fan. And here is a rare cover with him illustrating one of my favourite characters, Dawnstar.

If you ask me tomorrow I'll probably give you a totally different answer, but right now I'll just say "Alex Ross".

In 2016 my New Year resolution was to stop buying comic books (single issues), mainly to save up for a complete run of a comic book magazine I used to buy as a kid.
In 2023 I accumulated what I thought should be enough for the task and started exploring my options. Much to much disgust, people who had those books saw in me an opportunity to rob me blind. In other words, the offers I got were ridiculous, even though I was saving for the past 7 years. Well, finally I gave up negotiating and thought instead I'd buy comic books I could easily access. To my surprise, my favorite artists hardly (if ever) do interior pages these days. This limited my options to comic books I either knew nothing about or I did not care for, yet they had, what I considered great covers. And then I blew my funds. In doing so I mainly concentrated on the work of four artists. I'd mention all their names here, but that would go against the rules, so I'll pick one.

    Julian Totino Tedesco
You might have noticed his signature: TT in a circle, on some of the comic book covers.

I chose him because he is very versatile. TT does have some "serious" covers in his portfolio, but also has a great sense of humor which he expertly conveys in other instances.
Here is the latest I picked up from him:
    links to my books:
    "TWISTED HOLIDAY HORROR TALES"
    @ comiXology
    @ IndyPlanet
    "Blues Ratz"
@ Amazon: Spec. BLUE Version Paperback
    @ IndyPlanet: Collected Edition

    George Perez.

Superman carrying Mjolinor and Cap's shield will always be my favorite character.

The cover is a wraparound cover.

I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

One of my favorite artists is Alan Davis but would his work have been the same without the talent of the inker, Paul Neary?

The first picture of this duo I have met.
“Strength is the lot of but a few privileged men; but austere perseverance, harsh and continuous, may be employed by the smallest of us and rarely fails of its purpose, for its silent power grows irresistibly greater with time.” Goethe
