I don't think Zee needs to get into traditional fisticuffs all the time myself. I also don't think she needs to be nerfed that much.

I meant nerfed according to the situation. In the above pictures she was fighting alongside Catwoman. It would be really stupid to have Zatanna wish all the bad guys away so Jones has Zee limit herself from using magic as a wager to make it more fun.



Technically Zatanna has always been nerfed in every comic she's been in. She can be interesting to write and draw unless you are Geoff Johns who wants to do away with her in as less panels as possible. Remember how in JLA, Geoff made Zatanna stop Despero in one panel while Batman got to fight him for pages and pages?

I think it's not strange that magical being, Gods, Mythical Entities that have high power would enforce unique magic rules/situations on how to beat them aka putting a nerf story plot-wise.

I'm sure You can find a lot in Greek mythical stories. But there is a unique example from Hindu Mythology, the tale of Narasimha.


Narasimha himself is an avatar of the Vishnu God that have special task to kill an Invicible warlord, Hiranyakasipu. Hiranyakashipu gained a boon from Brahma (Another God beside Vishnu) due to which he could not be killed:
- during the day or night, inside or outside the house;
- neither in the sky nor on land nor in Heaven nor in Underworld;
- Neither by deities, human nor by an animal.
- neither by any weapons.
So, he thought he asked for a boon so cleverly he would never face death. Endowed with this boon, he began to wreak chaos and havoc.

To find a loophole around it, Vishnu creatively assumed a hybrid in the form of a part-lion, part-man as Narasimha. Vishnu found some way around the boon:
+Neither day time nor night time. It's ‘Sandhya samayam' sunset time, at the threshold of his palace;
+He places him in his lap. Neither on land nor in sky.
+Neither human nor animal. He is both. The half upper body is of a lion and the lower body is of a human.
+He did not use any weapons as he used his claws to disembowel Hiranyakasipu

By doing that, Vishnu play with the rule and still respecting Brahma boon that given to Hiranyakasipu. Narasimha then become a significant iconic symbol of creative resistance, hope against odds, victory over persecution, and destruction of evil.

I thought she might be Donna and the height difference was how they were making her Diana's little sister. Facial variety isn't on display with Chiang's art of our heroines here.
He does generally give good Zatanna...

It's good but I expected more from Artgerm.


Ariel Diaz has a similar style but hers looks much better.
