Spider-man pre sales are looking great but thanks to sony limited it to select theaters and limited showing they threw away what could have been a good box office rerelease.

    Oops sony.

    Here we go.

    CW hits first.

Director Alex Garland’s provocative dystopian thriller “Civil War” lit up the box office with $25.7 million in its debut. It’s the first A24 movie to lead the charts in North America, setting an opening weekend record for the New York-based specialty studio. It also marks the biggest R-rated start of the year.

Heading into the weekend, “Civil War” was projected to kick off with $15 million to $20 million. Those ticket sales would have been enough to overtake 2018’s “Hereditary” (which opened in fourth place to $13.6 million) as A24’s biggest debut. But the film, starring Kirsten Dunst as a journalist who traverses a violently divided United States, is benefitting from curiosity among moviegoers (how, exactly, does this blue-state/red-state rift play out, and does it hit too close to home in an election year?) and premium large formats like Imax and Dolby Cinemas. According to the studio, “Civil War” overperformed in markets like Los Angeles and El Paso, Texas (coincidentally, those states lead the so-called successionist “Western Forces” in the movie).

The monkey and the lizard drop to second.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s monster tentpole “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” dropped to second place after two weekends in the top slot. The film added $15 million in its third outing, bringing its domestic tally to $157 million.
Ghostbusters in third. On the edge of $100m.

Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” remained in third place with $5.3 million from 3,350 theaters. After four weeks on the big screen, the sci-fi comedy sequel has generated $96 million at the domestic box office.
Panda kicks Oman out of dodge and steals 4th.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” moved up to the No. 4 spot with $5.2 million in its sixth weekend. So far, the animated family film has grossed $173 million in North America and more than $450 million globally. With its $85 million production budget, “Kung Fu Panda 4” is well positioned in its theatrical run.

Note looks like shrek 2 is doing really well also from reports. Also note looks like madame web crossed $100m. Congrats.

I wonder if Ghostbusters’ rather disappointing box office will mean no third movie. Though we’ve already talked about how Sony did the flick no favors with that release date.

Hopefully the cartoon will generate more fans for the franchise and keep it alive.

It's an interesting case because it finished 3rd in the box office a month into it's run. I don't think you kill an IP like Ghostbusters over what was a terrible executive decision.

They are already talks of a 3rd Ghostbusters film. This one had a production budget of $100 million. And still has a few more weeks of domestic to go ahead.

As long as Sony keeps the budget low and can sell merch and all...they should have an ok series to keep doing films on. But they can't go insane and throw a Spider-Man budget into these films.

Ghostbustes (2016) didn't stop the franchise, Frozen Empire isn't going to do that.

Frozen Empire will make "some" money at the end. The 2016 one lost money.

    Budget $144m

    Box office

    $229.2m.

Don't mess with conan in japan. Just ask both avengers infinity war and endgame that got their butts kicked by conan there.

The problem with 2016 was we don't know the ad and merch loses for that film. I think when they saw how badly Wiig and McCarthy's followup films did they decided to push forward with the Reitman version.

GB 2016 made enough money to open up the vanity production company, Ghost Corps, in full.

Without fulfilling the contractual obligations required to make a GB3, and doing well enough, we never would have gotten Afterlife without Answer The Call.

Globally, Frozen Empire is at $160M+ ... I really don't think armchair BOers understand what constitutes a successful film.

Frozen Empire has legs it seems as it stabilized it's drop, some even MCU films failed to do not named Endgame or IW.

More GB merch is dropping this week (cereal and rice crispy bars!!!).

Ancillary revenue meaning merchandise, digital rentals & purchases, and other licensing opportunities in addition to the box office will influence the future of the franchise on the big screen. HR and Vanity already said it's fine on just ancillary and actuals alone ...

Spirits Unleashed is raking in money without using paid DLC, packs, or a LSM.

Toho made Godzilla movies at a loss for many many years, simply because the toys, and the associated jump in sales of toys when new movies came out, more than made up for the shortfall. It's why they wanted American Godzilla movies forever, get all the sweet toy sales in Japan without losing money on a movie. Considering they seem more than willing to license out Ghostbusters to anybody, I bet they make some money from that.

Think about it, Spirit, Hasbro, and another company in Europe all make licensed proton packs. Hasbro makes toys. Illfonic made a great game. Dark Horse has the comic license now. They fully fund and fully complete stretch goals for all the HasLab stuff. Even the crappy CrytpoZoic board games made mad bank.

I just hope the upcoming animated series on Netflix makes money. I think Ghostbusters would work way better as a TV show than as movies. Imagine a live action RGB show!? We can do that now.

    It'll be fine.

Ghostbusters 2016 lost $70+ million and made Sony do a complete change up. Answer the Call cost the studio money.

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/ne...likely-918515/

Ghost Corps was formed in March 2015 , a full year and months before the 2016 film cost money. At this same time Sony released a video game from a studio and that game flopped so bad , the studio went bankrupt.

So Sony did the wise thing ...they completely went a new direction and they re-released the classic 2008 game in a remaster deal. To get fans interested in the brand before Afterlife.

Sony also took a $1B write down.

It lost at best, $25M but like I said ancillary profits saved the day. And fully cemented Ghost Corps as a viable production company. Which is on the Ghost Corps founders plaque.

Two new movies, new cartoon, several successful videos games later ... I mean really? The false amount listed in the HR article (taken from mid-closing of the theatrical run speculatives) would have mothballed the franchise.

The worst you can say is Answer The Call made Ghost Corps pivot directions and pissed off some misogynist fans.

A private company is not going to tell you their actual loss.

It didn't take in tons of BO money but the losses were greatly over blown.

Shrek 2 overperformed in fact it beat the 3 pixar rereleases. Note dreamworks had ads and a full trailer out for it something disney didn't. promoting your movie. What a great concept. Disney should try that next time.

Kung fu panda execs confirm hollywood is confused by anime success. Sony did a full speech at CinemaCon also telling movie chain owners to wake up on anime also!
