I do find it interesting that musical Films whether it be an auto biographical film like this Bob Marley Film or Queens, and concert films like Taylor swift seem to be doing well. Good for them!

Madame Web's performance against Bob Marley's movie (which doesn't have awesome reviews at all) shows that by now superhero movies have to be at the very least based on the very biggest known superhero characters, or be very good, or else.

I like how the biggest box office success stories this year are The Beekeeper (which is already Jason Statham's biggest solo movie outside of his Jurassic Shark movies), maybe Mean Girls (musically waives to Marley, Wonka and the upcoming Joker).

Even from last month the biggest successes were Godzilla Minus One which also included getting an Oscar nomination for the first time ever in franchise history, The Boy and the Heron probably crowning Miyazaki's history in the Oscars too, Wonka becoming a bigger hit than Aquaman (musically waves to Marley, Mean Girls and the upcoming Joker), Anyone But You (which is single-handedly saving rom-coms right now), Migration (which is pulling an Elemental for Universal right now) and Poor Things, which is making Emma Stone sitting at the Oscars table again.

These numbers are not set in stone and there are always fluctuations, but the numbers box office site is projecting RIGHT now 2024 box office to total 5.8 billion in North America this year. Thats 4 billion less than 2023. However anyone wants to spin this. Its awful.

Good for Bob Marley. I thought it was in trouble with the reviews, but the audience seems to have enjoyed it.

This is why my focus is on movie theater, rather than studio, profitability. There’s been a steady increase in areas without easy access to theaters as they shutdown newly unprofitable, economically unviable locations. It seems like the decline in reliable blockbusters and the strikes are going to speed that up.

Thats why these rants against certain studios or people saying oh look this movie made money for the studio are worthless. The people who suffer from the down turn in box office are the regular folks who work and operate these theaters. And the cities and towns that collect taxes from these theaters. People who depend on steady box office dont care if a movie that costs 50 million made 150 million.

This is true, but misleading. The profit seems to have come from a combination of them charging more for the services, increased ad revenue---but increased from what level, which is encouraging, and licensing revenue, and increased new partnerships. It does not seem to derive primarily from big release successes, but rather those other factors.

Anyway, for a more detailed dive into this:

IF WB does get sold, either to NBC/Universal or to Paramount or whatever, how will that effect DCU plans?

While expected to hit 2nd demon slayer looks like did beat bob on friday taking first place. Bob is expected to win the weekend however. Also, madame web dropping to 4th on friday. Yikes.

    https://nypost.com/2024/02/24/entert...he-box-office/

Here we go. Bob lost to demon slayer friday and maybe even saturday but won the fight on sunday taking first before dune defeats it next week.

The film added $13.5 million from 3,925 North American theaters in its second weekend of release, a 53% decline from its debut. “One Love” has been a surprise box office success with $71.1 million domestically and $100 million globally. It cost $70 million, and the studio only gets to keep roughly half of ticket sales, so it’ll need to keep singing in theaters to justify its cost.

“Bob Marley” topped the charts for the second consecutive weekend despite three new releases. Sony and Crunchyroll’s anime sequel “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” fared the best among newcomers with $11.5 million from 1,949 theaters — enough for the No. 2 spot.
Demon slayer overperformed what they were saying beating the 2nd movie but nowhere near the first.

For “Demon Slayer,” its initial ticket sales are slightly better than its predecessor, 2023’s anime adventure “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village” ($10.1 million in its initial weekend) but far behind 2021’s “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” (an impressive $21 million amid pandemic-era theater closures).
Ordinary angels hits 3rd. dolls crashes into 8th.

Hilary Swank’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” landed in third place with an uninspired $6.2 million from 3,020 venues while director Ethan Coen’s comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls” crash-landed in eighth place with a grim $2.5 million from 2,280 locations.
Madame web falls to 4th already!

Migration just refuses to leave the top 5!

“Madame Web” dropped to fourth place with $6 million from 4,103 theaters, a harsh 61% decline from its initial outing. Sony’s “Spider-Man” spin-off, starring Dakota Johnson as a paramedic with psychic abilities, couldn’t overcome the terrible reception and has generated just $35 million to date.

Universal and Illumination’s animated comedy “Migration” rounded out the top five with $3 million from 2,434 venues in its 10th weekend of release. To date, the family film has grossed $120 million at the domestic box office and $268 million worldwide.

Next week dune 2 arrives with about dry grasses, chosen and 80s movie labyrinth standing up to challenge it.

I've enjoyed observing The Beekeeper be a rather silent early 2024 success.
Does anyone know if its International run is over? That figure hasn't changed in 2 weeks now.

According to IMDB it's already released everywhere. But it came out a month and a half ago. What's impressive is it made more than Mechanic Resurrection for his solo movies, and Resurrection had 3 times the box office from China.
