If Wonka's box office earnings are at a steady pace, it might reach $1 billion dollars before the end of its worldwide theatrical run.

I keep forgetting that it's a musical- I guess they tried to hide it in the marketing. Apparently it's the most successful musical since the Greatest Showman in 2017.

Not really. Dance number right in the first trailer and they released audio from the songs on youtube and said it was a musical before its release.

If they were trying to hide that then they did a pretty horrible job of it.

Boy and the heron breaking some records in america and uk.

Anime movie up in the uk also.

    https://deadline.com/2024/01/studio-...ds-1235795168/

Studio Ghibli‘s animated adventure movie The Boy and the Heron is continuing to blaze a trail for anime, in Europe, Asia and North America.

Following its Golden Globes win last week, the first ever for a non-English animated feature, the movie has crossed multiple box office milestones in Europe.

Pic has grossed £3.9M at the UK box office to date, making it Hayao Miyazaki’s highest-grossing title ever in the UK and Ireland, beating the likes of Spirited Away (£1.1m, 2003), Howl’s Moving Castle (£999k, 2005) and Ponyo (£880k, 2010).
It is also the second-highest grossing anime title of all time in the UK and Ireland box office, behind only Pokemon: The First Movie (£11.7M, 2000), and it has become the biggest anime release in the UK and Ireland in more than 20 years.

The movie has already become the top-grossing original anime film ever released in North America ($42M and counting) and Japan ($56M).

In Italy, the film is tracking to be about five times more than the largest Japanese anime to date, having beaten any previous animes by the third day of release. It currently stands at $4.3M after being released first week of January.

In Germany, it has seen the third-highest opening weekend of all time for an anime title.

Hayao Miyazaki’s festival favourite charts the story of a young boy named Mahito. Yearning for his mother, he ventures into a magical realist world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning.

Anime is one of the genres to have seen a real boost from the growing global proliferation of international content. UK anime box office in both 2022 and 2023 has more than doubled any other year between 2010-2021.

Godzilla Minus One, another recent Japanese-language title, has also done well in the UK (and the U.S.). Both The Boy And The Heron and Godzilla Minus One were in the UK box office top ten over the Christmas period, which is an extremely rare — and potentially unprecedented — feat for two Japanese-language titles.

The Book of Clarence big screen release has been killed in the uk.

I don't mean hide in a negative way. It just wasn't the focus of the marketing. And that's true for the most part.

    Edit: look at this

Again — a great result for a musical after the genre’s post-Covid funk, and the studio intentionally didn’t sell Wonka as such in trailers. Why? Apparently, test-audience focus groups generally hate musicals and the only way to get people into the theater with one is to trick ’em. If they get in the door and wind up enjoying themselves, then business is solid for a studio on a musical. This is the same reason why Lionsgate didn’t lean into those beautiful country ballad numbers in its Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes marketing to set that prequel apart from the rest of its previous sequels. Speaking of that movie, it continues to hold well at -35% with a fifth weekend of $6M and running total of $145.4M. Look for a pop on the pic during the Christmas and New Year’s Eve periods.

Aquaman 2 Heads To Digital Much Sooner Than Expected After Disastrous Box Office

John campea says marketing was 200 million dollars and aquaman 2 would need 600 million to break even.

    Note-
Since the budget was 205 million it would need over 600 million to break even.
    610 million to break even.

The old DCEU, hopefully. I don't know how the new one is called now, and I want it to succeed but I am skeptical for now.

So it "bombed" but because DC was smart enough to release the film in late December and not November or June with a lot of competition it managed to do better than Marvels and The Flash.

Also very curious to see how this weekend goes as three releases all look good to me (Founders Day, ISS, Queen IMAX concert)

Box office with snow everywhere and no big releases did as expected. Mean girls takes first from wonka while everything else stays as is.

With no major movie releases coming this weekend or the next, the box office is sinking into a big slump as Paramount’s “Mean Girls” is holding on to the No. 1 spot with just $11.7 million grossed.

“Mean Girls” isn’t looking like it is going to have significant legs beyond its opening weekend audience as it is dropping 59% from its opening weekend. The good news for the film, which was moved from a streaming release to theaters, is still on its way to turning a decent profit with a 1o-day domestic total of approximately $49.3 million against a $36 million budget.

Beyond that, the top 5 on the charts remains unchanged from MLK weekend, as overall weekend totals are set to sink 35% to $68 million. The one new wide release to hit theaters on Friday, Bleecker Street’s “I.S.S.,” didn’t crack the top 5 with just $3 million grossed from 2,520 theaters. With a C- on CinemaScore, its theatrical run will likely be short.

On the specialty side, Ava DuVernay’s biopic drama “Origin” was released by Neon in 125 theaters, grossing $875,000 for a decent per theater average of $7,000. Starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and based around Isabel Wilkerson’s book “Caste: The Origins of our Discontents,” the film holds an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Back in the holdover-filled top 5, Amazon MGM’s “The Beekeeper” added just under $8.5 million in its second weekend as it now holds a 10-day domestic total of $31.1 million. Warner Bros.’ “Wonka” is in third with $6.7 million as it continues to push towards $200 million domestic in the final stages of its theatrical run with $187 million grossed after six weekends.
