The way I interpret that Betsy panel she's putting up a TK shield that's only visible when it's struck, and when it is hit, it creates the butterfly signature.

Somewhat like how shields in many science fiction stories are presented, an invisible force field, where one can only see it's actual (often bubble) shape when something strikes it? Makes sense.

Would be amusing to imagine the entire field is basicly a quilt of invisible butterfly shaped parts akin to a lamellar armor.
