Neither Fatal Attractions i still read to this day. And the X-Cutioners song was my first crossover i ever experienced in the X-Universe. A crossover that really didnt have Xavier or Cyke or Jean at the forefront. A story with Apaccy, Stryfe, the MLF, the Dark Riders, Sinister the horseman. Which lead to the Legacy Virus, which really impacted Mutants. What more can you ask for?
"She never loved you, you know you always frightened her"- Cyclops
"And if she was here right now....Who do you think she would be more frightened of?"- Wolverine
It was a different time back then...I enjoyed both.
If I have to give an answer...Fall of X.
Lord Ewing *Praise His name! Uplift Him in song!* Your divine works will be remembered and glorified in worship for all eternity. Amen!
Whichever one turned Wolverine inside out.
“Generally, one knows me before hating me” -Quicksilver
As a kid I would often get tired of big events and crossovers. I guess I still do because I became bored with X of Swords about half way through. I read the X-men during the 90s, and in the early 2000s or so I became more critical of the 90s (probably in part due to everyone else online was), but now that I'm older and there has been so much X-content between then and now I often look back on the 90s with fondness especially on back reading.
What I liked about X-cutioner's song was the Cable/Scott/Jean story. I also liked the "Gold" team issues. For Fatal Attractions - I love all the stories collected in the trade. I love a good Magneto story especially one that shows the differences between his approach and Xavier. I do prefer Magneto as a villain though a complex one and I know that is a minority view online - where most young fans see Magneto as right and Xavier just reduced to respectability politics or worse the actual villain of the story.
At the time Colossus joining Magneto felt like a big deal. It was a shock. Being a big fan of the Gold Team I was sad to see him go from my fav book (Uncanny). I also loved the parts with Kitty and having her and Nightcrawler show up in the main Xbooks again.
X-Cutioners song for me. So much going on and what with 3 different villains all trying to make a play. I loved it.
But why would anyone call them overrated and over the top?
If I had to choose X-Cutioner's Song > Fatal Attractions.
I may need to reread but...
- Fatal Attractions was fractured. You didn't need to read X-Factor, X-Force or even Excailbur. So 3 core issues vs 12 of XS.
- XS would have been ten times better if they never brought back Stryfe. He was such a broken man...more like a angry child actually.
- XS having all the teams rumbling then breaking into mixed groups...Bishop, Cable and Wolvy.
- XS Sinister, Apocalypse, Stryfe, Dark Riders...enemies becoming allies...
- Rahne & Rictor sitting in a tree...
Looking back I think XS had more memorable moments.
I'm wondering if it shouldn't have stuck with its original premise, that Cable was the clone and Stryfe the original, and just had them both die at the end for real. We would've missed out on some good Cable stuff that came later for sure, though. Like Soldier X and the whole Cable/Deadpool run, the Messiah Trilogy and all the stuff with Hope... but it would've made XS a much more powerful story that way. Instead Cable came right back, and then Stryfe did too later on. The only really lasting thing from that crossover was the Legacy Virus, whereas Fatal Attractions saw Colossus with the Acolytes for some time and Wolverine sans adamantium for even longer... not to mention the impact to Magneto and ultimately the birth of Onslaught coming out of FA too.
“Not as good as I once was… but I’m as good, once, as I ever was.”
well here's why
Colossus couldn't switch back because of some stupid dent in his metal forehead
Jean and Xavier just standing there while Magneto rips/pulls out Wolverine's adamantium
Magneto managed to survive a slash to the stomach from Wolverine
Jubilee being there at Iylanna's deathbed. sure Jubilees the same as as Magik back then but Kitty knew Colossus's sister more than Jubilee
Fatal Attractions. Magneto has an orbiting base that humanity is threatened by so the X-Men have to fly up to stop him and results in Magneto being shelved at the end. They already did that with the first three issues 1991 reboot but having Colossus become an acolyte and Magneto EMP pulse the world along with liquifying and pulling out the adamantium from Wolverine makes it much, much worse.
It also is a direct cause of Onslaught existing and being the way they resolve the Bishop 'who is the traitor in the future' arc.

Some people are talking about the aftermath of the events.
Let's stick to comparing what happens inside the issues of each event.
Oh right, I always get confused trying to remember which one Fatal Attractions is because of the repeat plot about Magneto threatening the Earth from orbit. None of these 90s events really stay with me, having read them years after the fact, as they’re trying too hard to be x-treme and shoulder-paddy. It’s like - chill out mate, you’re a silly picture book for children.
