For the old Superfriends no MM. But DCAU had him as a major player and some of my favorite JL comic runs are Martian centric.

Right, but by the time I was actively reading comics in 1976, he hadn't been a JLer for quite a while. OTOH, I remember both Aquaman and Mera (Aqualad, too) going back to the late '60s Saturday mornings.

There aren't 5 specific characters I always want. I do think they should always have a big gun like Superman, Supergirl or Shazam; a Green Lantern; a speedster; a magical character; a strategist.

For me, the Justice League should be a vessel to showcase superheroes who don't headline their own magazines, while having at least one popular character per story to draw in the readers. With that said, your breakdown makes sense.

I'm a big Aquafan, but feel like Arthur always gets 3rd wheel treatment on the team. That's why I opted for J'onn instead.

Hmmm...not sure. Always liked Hawkman and Black Lightning, so either one is good.
