"Good grief. Why can't I have a normal dog cover like everyone else?"

So many dogs to choose from.

I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

And I hated everything about this issue.

I definitely hated it too. The cover made me hopeful, IIRC. I hated this entire arc and I remember people defending it, which is their right, of course, but the whole thing seemed pointless and mean-spirited to me.

I didn't read this, but I've heard about...isn't this where spoilers:
Wonder Dog kills Marvin and cripples Wendy?
    end of spoilers

At this time I think DC was still leaning heavily in the grim tone. We were getting Identity Crisis with Sue Dibny spoilers:
    getting sexually assaulted
end of spoilers. Cry For Justice where Speedyspoilers:
has his arm chopped off and his little daughter killed
end of spoilers. And then the follow up where drug addicted Speedy spoilers:
beats up some guys holding a dead cat
    end of spoilers!

It was getting close to unintentional self parody.

Yup. It's hard to believe this grimdark schlockfest was written by the same guy who wrote all-ages fun like Gravity and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane.

Yeah, and they did all they could to erase Impulse (my fave) and other 'fun' or 'lighthearted' characters during that era too. Or at least it seemed so.
