    Default Ultraverse

So I've been on a 90's kick lately picking up titles not from DC or Marvel. I've recently purchased a lot of Stormwatch, Wildcats and Supreme books. Was interested in picking up Ultraverse books. How were Sludge, Rune, Night Man, Mantra, Prime, etc.? All feedback would be greatly appreciated. As always, thank you in advance. 👍🏻

The early Ultraverse before Marvel rebooted the whole universe was really good and it wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel it was creators that had worked for Marvel and DC getting a chance to new takes on those kind of characters that Marvel and DC would never let them do. BWS' run Rune was great and Mantra might have been ahead of it's time. I liked the more blue-collar Batman kind of vibe that The Night Man, The art on Sledge and Solitaire being good was the only thing I remember about them. Prototype was good. Prime was good but sadly one of the creators got arrested and sent to prison for child porn and that kind of put a dark cloud over the series and UltraForce was a blast with George Perez showing that when came to team books why he was and still is and IMHO the GOAT.

I think Firearm, written by James Robinson with art by Cully Hamner and others, was probably the best of the lot and my favorite. I like a lot of the concepts and talent more than some of the actual execution on a lot of the books though. Haven't read any of them in a long time though, and Firearm, Rune and the Ploog drawn Sludge Red X-Mas Special are the only ones I have hung on to.

Speaking of George Pérez, I'll always love it when he brought all the Ultras together for their big event at the time...

I agree Pre-Marvel Ultraverse was really good. I was mad that Marvel ruined it totally.

I have enjoyed reading Prime, Hard Case and Solitaire.

I liked the animated series from the 90s. Never have had a good idea how similar it was to the comics since I didn't really read it.

That is an awesome double panel!

George Perez was truly a legend.

I recently recalled the Ultraverse was a thing. I’ve been reading online trying to figure out why Marvel/Disney has kept the Ultras and CrossGen IPs collecting dust in the vault for decades now. Recurring mentions of contracts and NDAs for sale that happened nearly 30 years ago.
