Default New 52 Earth 2 Question (No Spoilers Please)

So I've heard good things about the New 52 Earth 2 series, but I've never read it. Comixology is having a fantastic DC sale right now (everything is pretty much $4.99) so I picked up the 6 volumes of Earth 2 and both volumes of Worlds End. I was curious though, is "Earth 2 Society" essential to pick up? Or can I just stop after Worlds End?

I've also heard it's not good reading after Robinson was done, but I figured at this price I might as well get the lot of them.
    "Darkseid...always hated music..."

Every post I make, it should be assumed by the reader that the following statement is attached: "It's all subjective. What works for me doesn't necessarily work for you, and vice versa, and that's ok. You may have a different opinion on it, but this is mine. That's the wonderful thing about being a comics fan, it's all subjective."

Robinson was maming a lot of World Building, and created a lot of concepts which I was eager to see them develop as originally intended
See: A World without The Trinity, Sloan's grand plan, the World Army as a whole, and a lot more

Sadly, he had to go before it was intended, and a lot of what he did was kind of ignored or retconned by the following writers, which is a shame tbh
(Altough Taylor's run was quite good imo, as expected from him)

World's End was the E2 equivalent to Ultimatum, as in a unnecesary bloodfest which thrashed and destroyed the entirelly of E2 as a whole (both figuratively and literally)

And regarding your initial question, I have mixed opinions on society
The first half (wilson's run) was really bad
The main villain hell turn was laughable, the main cast eas ooc, the story itself was quite rushed and the art was really rough
But the 2nd half (Abnett's run) was a good change
The story flowed naturally, the characters felt like their actual selves, and the art improved a lot
The finale of E2 as a whole, felt satisfying and left the characters in a good place, which they deserved after all the crap they were through

I hope all this helped you regarding your purchase of the E2 saga
    Cheers !

    Buy Robinson and Abnett.

Ignore Taylor (it really wasn't that good).

Use Wilson to wipe your butt after a long smelly defecation.

I quit buying the series during Taylor's run because it was overly DOOM / GLOOM / DESTRUCTION, but it's hard to say how much of that was the fault of the writer vs. editorial direction (since many of the problems started during the end of Robinson's run before he quit the title).

Also, didn't the Earth 2 series tie in with the weekly Convergence title?

Thank you for the replies, this was pretty much what I was looking for! To be honest, I hadn't even looked at the writers names on the post-Robinson books, so finding out Taylor did some work is intriguing to me (I quite enjoy his Injustice stuff). My comic backlog is massive, in both physical & in digital, so if the first half of Society is bad then I may just leave that alone for now. And if Worlds End is, well, an ending of sorts, then that sounds kind of fun...I've always wanted to see DC "end" the universe before a big reboot, but since they won't do that this may be the closest I get. Sounds fun.

I started reading volume 1 this morning, got 3 issues in. Not bad so far! Quick question, with Supergirl & Robin flying into the boom tube in issue 1 I know that is how they became Powergirl & Huntress on Earth 1. Do they come back to Earth 2 in this series, or are they contained to their own series?

Thanks again for the replies. With time at such a premium these days, I'm always hesitant to jump into new series so I'm happy to hear this journey is worth taking.

    Spoiler:
    spoilers:
They return to Earth 2 for issues #25-26 of Worlds' Finest.
Issues #27 - 32 of that series deal with the Earth 2 versions of Superman and Batman prior to their deaths in the beginning of the Earth 2 series.
    end of spoilers

Interesting...thank you. Is that series worth picking up as a companion to the E2 stuff?

If you wanna expand your E2 knowledge, you can pick them up :P
It serves as a way to know how E2 life was, before everything went to hell with the 1st Apokolips invasion

You can also pick up Batman/Superman 1-4 (or 1-6?) of Pak´s run
It serves as a prelude to the entirely of E2, as it kind of shows why Darkseid was interested in invading E2 in the 1st place (which sadly wasnt elaborated upon in future issues)

I loved the book when it stared. For me the last really good issues is issue 28. Everything after that until Abnett comes on and tries to save things is garbage. Worlds End is the only "event" book I ever just gave up on half way through. It really is garbage on and epic scale, and the fact DC let one of the writers of that steaming pile write the Society book just baffled me. Issues 1-28 and the two Annuals are well worth reading.

I do agree about not blaming Talyor though. You can see editorials hands all over this book and that is why Robinson told them to go to hell and left to begin with. I think Taylor did the best he could with editorial forcing his hand to get them to where they wanted for Worlds End. Wilson just sucked though. On every level his writing was grabage.

I would say read both Earth 2 Robinson and Taylor. Both writers did a fantastic job writing and things didn't really belly up until World End came in. The writer from Earth 2 society was the same writer from World's End, and you could see that where the problem lied.

Plus it looks like Val Zod which was created during Taylor's run will be brought in by Bendis, so you can see the origin of Val Zod to get an understanding of the character before he comes into superman.

It did tie in with Convergence. Now, I like Convergence and thought it was a fun JSA/Warlord crossover. Kind of a goofy Elseworlds I would have really LOVED when I was a teenager.

And as much as Taylor gets the "editorial made him do it" defense, the books went from the nuJSA characters without the trinity to Batman's father, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen taking on an evil Superman without any of the characters the book was actually about. I think Alan Scott got a whole line in the first six issues. The only reason I don't rip this more is because Wilson's run was one of the worst wirting jobs I've ever seen in a professional comic book.

But again, how much of who Taylor focused on was because of Taylor's interest or because of an <NAME REDACTED>-directive?

Does it matter? It's fanfic violence porn which deserves to be ignored.

I just figured we should place the proper blame in the correct toilet.
