What are your thoughts on doing two rows on a shelf? I'm planning on having some cheap shelving built in the near future with enough space to do just that. Nothing special. The space available to me is VERY limited so I have no choice if I want to maximize my collection. Any drawbacks to consider other than, you know...half my books being hidden away.

I'm actually going to do that with my kallax actually. I also have really limited space right now but I haven't figured out the best way for this yet. Maybe more recent stuff in the front with whatever I'm reading maybe.

Right now, I have a Kallax (or maybe an Expedit from before they were discontinued) as a sideboard in my living room (2x4, lying horizontally), and four of the cubes are mine. One contains my favourite HCs and TPBs, and another contains newest floppies. I use three magazine holders to hold them for a period of about 6 months. Then I like to re-read them and store them longer term (right now in long boxes, but like I said I'm digging those folio boxes and might check those out instead.)

Cardboard magazine holders comfortably fit about 30-35 floppies with bags/boards. Three of these holders fit nicely into a cube on a Kallax. One contains X-Men books, one contains Avengers books (and events), and the third is Cosmic books. I have another in my bedroom that stores books I want to re-read in the immediate future before storage, and two more that contain Uncanny Avengers and Thor: God of Thunder. If an entire run is around 25-35 books (or a multiplie thereof), they store really well in these holders.

Here's one example of what I'm talking about. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30214429/

I also have three tall Billy bookcases, though they're mostly for prose novels (my wife has a massive collection, and I have a respectable one), and two short Billys as well (which contain my almost-complete Star Wars novel and comic collection, as well as most of my Essentials and other TPBs.
I like the look of those .

Tough choice. I would probably put favorites in the front along with books that might look great on display. A small section for a short must-read list. Any long running series I would do front and back. That way you know exactly what's sitting in the back row. Also, be careful with your kallax. I know it's sturdy, but I'm not sure how well it'll hold up to double the weight.

OK that makes things easier. All omnibi and Absolutes will go on the bottom two then all the thin new 52 dc stuff will go on top.

Good call. I'll be doing the same with Omnibus (I have 3 so far -_-), my 1 absolute and my DH Library Editions. I'd also like to put it out there that you can research reinforcing your Kallax a bit. Someone in this thread once asked about adding a back to it. It'll help stabilize the shelf a bit. I'm sure if you google a bit you can get ideas of what might work.

I've got expedit and because of space -havint two rows each cubicle. Second one (on the back) is with Omnis or OHCs - and front one is with TPBs or regular HCs. Only problem is that sometimes I'm not usre what is in second row.
Any ideas how to add some back to expedit?

Well, after years and years of debating what to do I've decided. This seems to be the thread for it but after getting separated and moving out it was time. I drove the 2 hours to Ikea and got 2 Kallax large models, the 4x4 shelving one, and 2 kallax smaller models, the 8 total, like half of 1 of the big ones, to stack on top to make it look bigger and hold more books. I must admit I'm pumped and no one really cares anywhere (or here probably haha) but I felt the need to tell anyone! I'm gonna be putting these together tonight. Hopefully I can get it done and soon I shall be posting to the Shelf Porn thread. Just in the midst of selling off or getting rid of masterworks and archives for the omnibus versions being released. I'm slightly stressed they won't continue the omnibus as far as the masterworks and archives go but I'm thinking they're around to stay at this point.

Now to decide what to do with the statue collection...(wall shelves i'm thinking in the 2nd bedroom/office, books are going in my dining room) considering I have the entire batman black and white line that's gonna be the first to get put up (except stupid batman beyond which is no impossible to find. grrrrrr).

Yeah, unlike the masterworks, archives, and epic collections, the omnibus line was never meant to collect complete series in order, just the most highly acclaimed runs and story lines.

Sounds great. I look forward to seeing your collection.

Thank you! I've never had proper shelving for my books so I'm quite excited. I built one kallax tonight and just started throwing books in to see how it looks instead of building the half size one. I was a little disappointed the Parker Martini edition doesn't fit...was thinking of leaving out one shelf in the half size one so the small amount of too large books can go in that space. Any other options?

    Looking forward for those pics.

Btw, I recently bought Batman Zombie b&w and it's very nice statue. I'm waiting for Bisley one next. Don't think I would be able to get all b&w line, some of them are super expensive, but will get Batgirl for sure: she looks soooo good on pictures.

You can find a way to place them on the top of your shelf with support so they stay standing straight up. Maybe a small dedicated shelf near by for just your largest pieces of your collection. I guess it depends on if it'll bother you not having the books exactly where you want. Possibly a small Billy bookcase that has adjustable shelves. Of course, this will require another purchase and a second trip to Ikea. Good luck.

EDIT: Your original idea might work to. Give it a try and see if you like it.

To be fair I've bought off and on since the Risso one was released. Main reason is I like the full statue instead of just the bust and when b & w line started they were only $50! Biz one is sweet ! Anyway stacked the half kallax on first one and sturdy. And looks sweet. Now to make the other 2 and get to organizing...the fun part!

And I think I like the adjustable Billy idea. That's probably what I'll do. Great idea

I finally got around to altering my shelves so that the backing is now firmly secured to each shelf so now all my trades sit equal depth without me messing with them.

Do any shelves actually come with fixed backings? The ones I've had are only secured around the edges leaving the mid section to bend and flap as it wants when a book is pressed against it.
