    GDT honored and revered the source material, but he also added a ton of his own personality and a sort of Harryhausen-inspired adventure feel (especially in the 2nd one). It's a fully realized take, you know?

    Mike's comics are so much about the formalism of the medium of comics itself I don't think a straight adaptation is doable. A filmmaker would have to bring something else to realize it. The 2019 film felt like a wikipedia summary of the comics.

    I feel like the animated films did a good job of blending the two together.

    I think Robert Rodriguez would be the guy to do a Hellboy movie, using his style and the approaches he took to Sin City and Alita.
