Mike's comics are so much about the formalism of the medium of comics itself I don't think a straight adaptation is doable. A filmmaker would have to bring something else to realize it. The 2019 film felt like a wikipedia summary of the comics.

They gave them the budget of a CW show.

I feel like the animated films did a good job of blending the two together.

I think Robert Rodriguez would be the guy to do a Hellboy movie, using his style and the approaches he took to Sin City and Alita.

The new trailer is a major improvement. It actually looks pretty good and very faithful to the excellent source material.

It's better. Still not hyping me much though. I wonder if stretching the crooked man to a whole movie is a good idea. The original story is one of my favorite Hellboy stories but I wonder if some of the ambiougity and mystery of it will be lost if we turn it into a full length movie.

Interesting how the new trailer just makes it seem like everyone already knows/likes Hellboy and knows/cares about who Mike Mignola is. Is this a low enough budget to cater to mostly comic book fans? I mean how many trailers don't even try to explain who the main character is? (especially when they look like HB) I certainly wouldn't mind getting a better sense of how this movie envisions him. (people who read the comics can guess since it's Mignola, but for others?)

Also, for something that's trying to be a horror movie, it's rare to have a protagonist everyone knows won't be in any real peril. The trailer needed to give me something to care about. (I imagine we're supposed to care about that woman, but we don't get enough of her either) If you're going to adapt one chapter of a larger ongoing story into a standalone movie, you need to up the stakes for that one story. Not sure if they've done that here. Or maybe nobody else cares about that sort of thing.

With no release date yet set for the US I'm thinking this is going straight to streaming. You have to book time with the major theaters months in advance so it just seems like they haven't even tried to get a theatrical distribution for this.

I see this is actually being released in cinemas here in South Africa at the end of the month. For now, at least. Wouldn't be the first movie to get bumped to streaming.

I had only vaguely heard about this movie so I checked out the trailer and, honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. Going full-on, low-budget indie horror is an inspired choice, I must say. And if nothing else, it can't be worse than the dull-as-dishwater previous film (though I did like David Harbour in the role).

I feel like it has to be worse than the previous outing. As poorly structured as the last film was the studio still thought it had a chance and released it domestically where as with this version there is as of yet no date. And there's only one reason a studio would opt to release a film internationally before releasing it here: they think it's a massive bomb.

Sure, but uncommercial and bad are not necessarily the same thing.

Though, on the other hand, there's a reason why studios tend to give low budget horror flicks a cinematic release. And if they still don't think this will turn a profit, that's a whole other question.

That's the thing, it has next to no budget and yet they're still hesitating on releasing which should tell you all you really need to know about the quality.

Yeah but have you seen some of the crap they release. Hollywood's quality control is less than perfect.

Eh, if they're gun-shy then it's horrible even by other standards.
