    Default Favorite Joker Stories

Spinning out of the Greg Rucka interview thread, what are your favorite Joker stories? I have no doubt this thread has been done many a time, I just haven't gotten in on those incarnations.

    Mine are, in comics:

    Joker (Azzarello)
End Game (the Arkham City tie-in)
    Soft Targets (Gotham Central)
    Arkham Asylum (Morrison)

    Outside of comics:

Timmverse Joker (including Return of the Joker)
    The Dark Knight (Ledger)

Oh and the Joker in Morrison's run and DKR.

The killing joke and the man who laughs are my favorites!

Pretty much anything Chuck Dixon wrote, with the exception of Last Laugh. I'm especially fond of the two "Fool's Errand" stories he wrote.

Paul Dini can be hit-or-miss on the character, but "Slayride" remains a genuine classic.

More underrated ones include John Arcudi's "Auteurism", C.J. Henderson's "Duty", Marv Wolfman's "Bad Blood", and of course J.M. DeMatteis' "Going Sane".

Perfect, real appearances (i.e. comics where I am much more judgemental):

Batman#1 and all subsequent appearances until silly Joker comes about (sorry, can't be arsed to check through to "boner"-style Joker issue #)
    Joker's 5 way revenge
Sign of the Joker/The Laughing Fish
    The Killing Joke
    TDKR
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth
    Knightfall
Knightquest - Death of Batman: The Movie arc
    NML
    Soft Targets
    Emperor Joker (Superman crossover)
    Slayride
    Death of the Family

    Outer Universe adaptations:
    Batman (89)
Batman: TAS (Be a Clown, The Last Laugh, Christmas With the Joker, Laughing Fish, The Man Who Killed Batman)
    Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
    The Dark Knight
    Arkham Asylum/City/Origins (all good)
"Has Sariel summoned you here, Azrael? Have you come to witness the miracle of your brethren arriving on Earth?"

"I WILL MIX THE ASHES OF YOUR BONES WITH SALT AND USE THEM TO ENSURE THE EARTH THE TEMPLARS TILLED NEVER BEARS FRUIT AGAIN!"

"*sigh* I hoped it was for the miracle."

Dan Watters' Azrael was incredible, a constant delight and perhaps too good for this world (but not the Forth). For the love of St. Dumas, DC, give us more!!!

    In alphabetical order...

The Clown At Midnight (Batman #663 - Grant Morrison)
The Killing Joke (that guy with the beard, you know who)
No Man's Land: End Game (Greg Rucka)
    Slayride (Paul Dini)
Soft Targets (Gotham Central - Ed Brubaker & Greg Rucka)

    Slayride
    Mad Love
The Laughing Fish/Sign of the Joker
    Going Sane
    The Killing Joke
Alex Ross & Paul Dini's "Case Study"
    Joker/Mask

With the exceptions of his first few episodes, all of his DCAU appearances were fantastic as well and would collectively qualify as my favorite.

Seconding Mad Love! Even though it's primarily Harley's origin story, I love Joker in it. It's just classic Joker, down to his obsession with Batman to the point where he won't let anyone else kill him except him.
Harley Quinn, New Suicide Squad, Grayson, Batgirl, Red Sonja, The Mighty Thor, Catwoman, Bitch Planet, Secret Six, Silk, Descender, Sabrina, Archie, JLA, DC Bombshells, Black Magick, Paper Girls, Tokyo Ghost, Vampirella, Scarlet Witch, A-Force, Extraordinary X-Men, X-Men '92, The Legend of Wonder Woman, All-New Wolverine, Power Rangers, Hellcat, Monstress, Descender

The surprisingly underrated Lovers and Madmen is my absolute favorite.

Joker was great too. I need to reread Death of the Family before I say. I enjoyed it but the Joker font was a bit distracting.

Off the top of my head (and in no particular order):

    The Killing Joke
    Joker
    Joker's Millions
A Clash of Symbols (Detective #617 by Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle)
Legends of the Dark Knight #50 (Joker origin story by Denny O'Neil)
