    Default favorite runs/story arcs

not really new to comics but the majority of the marvel stuff I've read is from the Marvel Now Launch or the Big Events/Crossovers from the last decade or so, just wondering what are some personal favorite or well thought of runs/arcs that would mostly be self contained that have come out the past 15/20 years or so.

Off the top of my head:

-Warren Ellis' run on Astonishing X-Men. There are references to past stories, but they are far from essential to understand what's happening.
    -The Immortal Iron Fist
    -Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four
    -FuryMax
    -Ellis' Secret Avengers

    And much more...

I really like this list of the 100 best comic book runs:
    http://goodcomics.comicbookresources...s-master-list/

It was made in 2012, based on votes by readers. Since it's a popularity vote, you get the most famous and often remembered titles, so don't expect obscure indie stuff. It includes all publishers and all time, but if you are only interested in Marvel or a certain period there are still enough recommendations for you. You get the really great runs, and there is a lot to enjoy there. Not everything will be to your taste. There are some old and extremely influential stuff that hasn't really aged that well, and perhaps some of the more recent stuff still needs to pass the test of time to see if it's really that good, but the list is impressive and could give you years of reading pleasure.

    Edit: Here's a similar list with storylines/arcs:

I am very biased as I am most an Ultimate Marvel reader. But in my opinion the Bendis/Begley run on Ultimate Spider-Man was outstanding, 111 issues of top quality comics (apart from the 2 issue freaky Friday story). It is almost self-contained, it has a 7 issue spin-off call Ultimate Six.

From the Marvel NOW/All New Marvel NOW

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly arc (#15 - 19) of Gerry Duggan & Brian Posehn's Deadpool
The God Butcher arc (#1-5) of Jason Aaron's Thor: God of Thunder

For a little bit earlier stories

Doctor Strange The Oath by Brian K Vaughan
    Joe Kelly's Deadpool run

Not sure why but I liked Cosmic Powers #1-6 though I don't hold it to the same regard as the ones mentioned above

That's all I can remember from the top of my head

I love Ultimate Spider-Man. Particularly for someone new to Spider-Man comics who wanted to get into them, it's incredibly good.

agree with you on the influential stuff from older story arcs db105, a lot of them have a great premise but dialogue doesn't age well with some of them or they can be a little to kiddy for me with the dialogue.

Morrison's X Men...a different take, and the Xorn thing floored me.

The Mantlo run on Hulk wherein Banner gained dominance and became a proactive force in the Marvel universe. As the book neared #300 it became clear that something was amiss, and the throwdown in #300 was both awesome and heartbreaking. The following arc--the mindless, exiled Hulk--was weird and different enough that I stuck around.

Rhodey takes over as Iron Man. I miss Clytemnestra and her nerdy brother at Circuits Maximus. And whatever became of the baby a homeless, alcoholic Tony Stark helped deliver?

Pretty much the entirety of Byrne's FF and Simonson's Thor.

Kieron Gillen's Journey Into Mystery was a masterpiece.
Frank Miller's two runs on Daredevil were also masterpieces. Also, Ann Nocenti's run was excellent, and Mark Waid's run has been fantastic.
Chris Claremont's legendary 16-year X-Men run is amazing.
Grant Morrison's New X-Men is stellar.
    Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men.
    Kelly Sue DeConnick's Captain Marvel.
    G. Willow Wilson's Ms. Marvel.
Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie's Young Avengers.
Peter David's X-Factor. Both the '90s run and the 2000s run. Actually, Peter David's anything, really - Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man 2099, Web of Spider-Man, and more.
Kraven's Last Hunt by J.M. DeMatteis.
    Greg Rucka's Punisher.
The cosmic stuff from Annihilation through The Thanos Imperative.
    Walter Simonson's Thor.
    John Byrne's Fantastic Four.
    Christos Gage's Avengers Academy.
    Joe Kelly's Deadpool.
Every single thing that Emma Rios has drawn.
Brahm Revel's Marvel Knights: X-Men mini.

I could keep going, but I'll stop.

This is a bit older than the 15-20 year mark, but to be honest, they're better than most of what they've put out in the last 10-15 years.

    Mark Gruenwald's Captain America.
    Tom DeFalco/Ron Frenz's Thor run.
    John Byrne's FF run.
John Byrne's West Coast Avengers run.
    Harras/Epting's Avengers run.
    Englehart's Silver Surfer run.
    Ann Nocenti's Daredevil run.
    Walt Simonson's FF run.
Capt. America by Waid & Garney.
    Kaminsky's Iron Man run.
    Peter David's Incredible Hulk run.
Chris Claremont's run on Uncanny X-Men & the New Mutants.
Roy Thomas's run on Dr. Strange.
    Starlin's run on Silver Surfer.
    Nicezia's run on X-Force & New Warriors.
    Kelly & Seagle's run on the X-books.
