The Walking Dead has (imo) the perfect first arc. You could almost have it as a 6 issue mini. It introduces the characters, the setting, starts up plots that carry forth over the rest of the series and has great artwork to back it up. It's just a strong opener.

Gotta agree with you on all of the above.

Off the top of my head, I'd also add Perez' Wonder Woman to the list.

As for my next choice, it's definitely Dixon/JRJR Punisher WarZone (1992)

Definitely, another favorite would be Carl Potts/Jim Lee Punisher War Journal (1988)

Savage Dragon (mini series #1-3, ongoing #1-3 etc)

Invincible (#7 would make this perfect, it has the big shock. But this book really grabbed me from #1)

Cobra (collected as The Last Laugh story. Starts strong, stays strong.)

Busiek's Conan run at Dark Horse

    Ranma ˝

    One Piece

Fist of the North Star (also OP and FoTNS have double length first chapters.)

Sin City (serialized in Dark Horse presents)
