I'd say every series deserves a look.

First was probably the best publisher in the history of comics for the overall strength of their line, so pretty much anything you pick up is going to be good. My highest recommendations would be:

the first two years of American Flagg! (the first year being, in my opinion, the finest run on an ongoing title in comics)
    Grimjack
    Nexus
    Jon Sable
    Dreadstar
the Moorcock adaptations (Elric, Corum, and Hawkmoon)
    Whisper

Nexus and Badger are my favorites, but you can't go wrong, really. If you want a little more obscure title, Mars is amazing.

    Mars, Mars, Mars--
and after that, why, I just copied md62!
    American Flagg!
    Nexus.
    Grimjack.
    Jon Sable.
    E-Man.

although of these, Grimjack grew tiresome for me after the first several issues. Also of course, while no longer really pertinent, First was the well, first publisher for Lone Wolf and Cub, too!
Incidentally, if you're looking for runs of these, I was a big supporter of First Comics and bought multiples of many series when I could....
Age/Bronze, Age/Reptiles, Alex&Ada, Anne Bonnie, Astro City, Bone, Briggs Land, Cerebus, Criminal, Courtney Crumrin, Eleanor & the Egret, Fables, Fatale, Fell, Grass Kings, Green Valley, Goon, Gotham Midnight, Groo, Hellboy, Hillbilly, Incognegro, Jack Staff, JL8, Jonah Hex, Kane, Lazarus, Little Nemo, Lone Wolf, Next Wave, Popeye, Powers, Princess Ugg, Resident Alien, SiP, Squirrel Girl, Stray Bullets, 10G, Thief of Thieves, Tuki, Uncle Scrooge, Usagi, Velvet

Dreadstar and Jon Sable are two of my top 5 comic series of all time. Starlin and Grell at the top of their game. There was even talk of a Sable/Batman crossover.

Most aren't, although they were at times linked with the interdimensional city of Cynosure, the setting for Grimjack. (Which is the reason it took so long to negotiate the Grimjack rites-- Cynosure preceded the series, and worked through several of the series as well as the initial Warp title.) Cynosure is the the central conceit of Crossroads, the crossover between the First titles. Other than that, most books were linked by creators-- Mike Baron's books, Nexus and Badger, had characters crossover every now and then.

Start at the beginning. Dark Horse has been collecting it in omnibii, and they're up to volume 6. The first series starts to run out of steam around issue 50 and The Next Nexus mini, but it's still a good book. The Dark Horse and self-published/Rude Dude stuff brings it back to excellence.
