I have been revisiting some of the DeFalco/Frenz run of ASM from the mid-1980's and I really think that was one of the great runs for this title. It followed the great Stern/JRJR run and didn't really feel like much of a letdown from that lofty position at all so that alone is a pretty ringing endorsement. But, re-reading those issues---in particular the Firebird 2-parter and the underrated Crusher Hogan one-off, they really hold up remarkably well and DeFalco really mastered writing both Peter and Spidey at what I consider to be the perfect age: a 20-something who is no longer a rookie/kid but not so experienced that he should be rubbing shoulders with Thor and Cap without feeling a sense of awe. Moreover, he also captured Spidey's sense of humor without cringe-worthy jokes and nonstop one-liners during battle; overall, just a wonderful time for the title and character. Not even the lukewarm Secret Wars II crossover and later botched Hobgoblin "reveal" could ruin this period.
