    Spectacular Spider-Man #95 Oct 1984
"The Dagger At the End of the Tunnel!" Guest-starring Cloak and Dagger.
After his brutal beating by the reanimated Silvermane, Spider-Man has the Black Cat
return him to his apartment to recuperate before they go searching for Cloak and Dagger.
Getting into bed, Spider-Man orders his costume off and the Black Cat can't help but not look at him without his costume on.
He has her promise him not to go after Silvermane alone. The Black Cat agrees but is not impressed with the orders.
However, she decides to go along with it lest her involvement may reveal her connection to the Kingpin.

Meanwhile, at the Kingpin's headquarters, he, the Answer, and the Kingpin's team of scientists
attempt to regain control of Silvermane who is still rampaging through the streets of New York.
Learning that the control collar is fully functional, the Answer deduces that since Silvermane was supposedly killed by one of Dagger's
light daggers, then perhaps a link between the two has been forged and that Silvermane now has a compulsion to follow that link.

This proves to be an accurate assumption, as at the Holy Ghost Church, Dagger is suddenly
struck down by the same pain she felt earlier when they were trying to take down drug dealers.
Although this makes Dagger incapable of giving her light to Cloak to control his hunger,
the duo go out to perform their nightly duties of hunting down drug dealers.
While back at the home of Peter Parker, his new alien costume suddenly comes to life and covers his sleeping body.
Although Peter is still sleeping the costume makes him gout out web-slinging through the city.
As the costume makes him swing by the Black Cat, Felicia thinks that Spider-Man is going
out into action on his own and ignoring her, and decides to go hunting for Silvermane herself.
After the Kingpin checks on his ailing wife he has the Answer contact the Rose
and has him organize a drug deal as a means of flushing out Cloak and Dagger.
As Spider-Man's sleeping body continues to swing through the city, the Black Cat
checks with her underworld connections to learn of the drug shipment on her own.

When Cloak and Dagger find some drug addicts, Dagger uses her light daggers to cure them of their addictions, attracting Silvermane.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man's costume brings him back to his home and leaves him in his bed. Peter wakes up thinking he has had a nightmare.
Calling his costume on him he attempts to call Felicia and gets no answer, prompting him to guess that she went after Silvermane alone.
As he swings through the city, his mind draws on all the troubles that have been going on with his personal life and circle of friends.

Elsewhere in the city, Sha Shan watches in secret as Flash Thompson gets into a car driven by two shady individuals.
Liz Osborn is excited about her coming child while Harry secretly worries about being able to afford the child.
Nathan Lubinsky and Aunt May have money troubles of their own, finding it difficult to keep their seniors boarding house in business.
Betty Brant deals with the loneliness of having her husband Ned Leeds on assignment in Europe,
while Joe Robertson deals with the pressures of being Editor at the Daily Bugle.
The only person who seems to be happy this day is J. Jonah Jameson,
who thinks giving the Editors position is the best decision he's made next to proposing to Marla Madison.

Not finding any leads, Spider-Man calls Ben Urich and Urich tips him off about a drug deal going on at the west side docks.
Sure enough, this is the deal that the Kingpin has had the Rose orchestrate.
As the deal is going down, the scene is being watched separately by Spider-Man, the Black Cat and the Answer.
When Cloak and Dagger arrive, Cloak is about to suck all the drug dealers into his dark dimension.
Knowing that this will kill the dealers, Dagger gives him the last of her light, even though it weakens her.
Spider-Man calls out Dagger's name, pointing her out to the Answer, the Rose and the Black Cat.

Just then, Silvermane bursts through the floor and it soon becomes a mad grab for Dagger.
Everyone, from Spider-Man and the Black Cat, Cloak and the Rose's men try to capture Dagger.
However, it is the Answer who ultimately grabs her and carries her away.

Cloak then consumes Silvermane and the remaining drug dealers
and before Spider-Man can tag him with a spider-tracer, he teleports away.

    Spectacular Spider-Man #96 Nov 1984
"The Final Answer!" Guest-starring Cloak and Dagger.
A winter storm is raging in New York City and Cloak is keeling over in pain.
He is suddenly forced to eject Silvermane and the two drug dealers that he pulled into the dark dimension in his cloak.

The pain of such a forced expulsion causes him to pass out in the snow,
leaving Silvermane free to resume his obsessed hunt for Dagger.

While at the apartment of Peter Parker, having just turned over his alien costume to Reed Richards for examination, he is busy testing
out his old web-shooters and mulling over the fact that Mary Jane just revealed the fact that she knew he has always been Spider-Man.
Donning his old costume, he meets up with the Black Cat and asks her to help him resume his search for Dagger.
This leads to a jealous snit between her and Peter over his concern for Dagger and Mary Jane being at his apartment earlier.
Spider-Man assures her that she is the only woman for him and the two depart, but not without Black Cat mulling over how
much she really knows and about Silvermane's resurrection due to the fact that the Kingpin gave her new bad luck powers.

While back at the Kingpin's headquarters, Kingpin is furious that Dagger is too
weak to provide the light energy that might make his ailing wife better again.
The Answer explains that Silvermane must be draining it from her remotely due to their link.
Just then Silvermane bursts into the Kingpin's lair, fighting off his guards with relative ease.

While at the home of Mary Jane Watson, Mary Jane mulls over the fact that she
knows that Peter is really Spider-Man and how she doesn't like how he risks his life.
Feeling lonely, she is happy for Peter in finding the Black Cat, someone who can share his adventures with.
She decides to hang out with a kindred spirit and tries to give Flash Thompson a call, but there is no answer on the phone.
Thompson, as it turns out, is braving the storm, fuming over what he believes to be an affair going on between Sha Shan and Peter Parker.
Deciding to take cover he runs into Betty Leeds as is trying to hide from Surtur's minions that are running loose on the streets of New York.
He swears to keep Betty safe, which is something that raises a stir in Betty.

Later, Spider-Man and the Black Cat try fruitlessly to find Dagger when Black Cat
lets slip that the Answer probably took her to the Kingpin's hideout.
Spider-Man calls her out on how she could know this and she tells him she learned it while he
was gone to Battleworld through her underground connections and just thought to mention it now.
Spider-Man is suspicious and tells her that she's been acting strange ever since he got back from the other side of the universe.
He also tells her that during the Secret Wars, Captain America and Mr. Fantastic both told him how she went around
the super-hero community to get super-powers before he vanished and when he got back she suddenly has powers.
She tells him that she knows the Answer is working for the Kingpin and that's it, and Spider-Man decides to let it go for now.

As they head to Kingpin's base, Cloak revives and goes there as well.

This soon leads to a full out battle between Silvermane, Kingpin, the Answer,
Spider-Man, Black Cat and Cloak as the heroes try to fight their way to Dagger.
The Kingpin is attempting to keep everyone away so that his machines might filter Dagger's powers to revive Vanessa.
Their attempts to keep Silvermane from getting to Dagger fail and upon touching her the Answer revitalizes her.

Regaining his mind, Silvermane flees the scene. With the villains defeated, Kingpin begs Dagger to heal his wife.
Instead, she uses her powers to revitalize Cloak and they flee. The Kingpin vows revenge
against Spider-Man and the Black Cat who flee the scene leaving the Kingpin to tend to his wife.

While at the Baxter Building, the sentient alien costume that Spider-Man has worn
until recently attempts to escape from the container that Reed Richards has put it in.

They were briefly mutants when it was a useful marketing tool. It was hinted at earlier when they teamed up with the New Mutants. Honestly, I'm not sure when that changed. Maybe around the time D'Spayre showed up to recon their origin.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of mutants triggering their mutant powers through something other than reaching puberty. At a minimum, if it's through some outside chemical, the X-Gene becomes redundant.

    New Mutants #24 Feb 1985
    "The Hollow Heart"
As the monstrous form of Sunspot attacks Xavier and Moira, Rahne arrives and transforms into
a taller, long-haired, radiant version of herself and exhibits the power to calm Bobby.
When Sam and Dani arrive, Bobby and Rahne disappear with Cloak's teleportation power.
Professor X learns from the other kids Cloak and Dagger's condition

and it becomes clear that the drugs Bobby and Rahne were given in Marvel Team-Up Annual #6
had a slow-acting effect on their genetics, compelling them only now to steal Cloak and Dagger's powers.

Bobby and Rahne teleport to Father Bowen's church.
Bobby is mortified that he devoured Colossus, but Rahne senses that Peter still lives
and is able to assume a silvery wolf form to dive into Bobby's darkforce and rescue him.

By then, Professor X has caught up with them along with Sam, Dani, Illyana and Rogue.
In attempt to solve the problem, they first try Dani's psi-talent, but it backfires
and nearly drives Bobby's powers out of control until Illyana's Soul Sword breaks the link.
Then realizing that a sorcerous approach is called for, Illyana takes Bobby and Rahne to Limbo,
despite Xavier's protests, and performs an exorcism that temporarily draws out the extra powers.
The powers then start to possess Illyana, and she drives them out at the cost of more growth of her Soul Armor.
They return to the church and it seems they're back where they started when Tandy and Ty,
escaped from the hospital and come to terms with their lot in life, arrive
and offer to give themselves up to return their powers back to where they belong.

    New Mutants #25 Mar 1985
    "The Only Thing to Fear..."
Cloak and Dagger join the New Mutants, along with Rogue and Professor X in the foyer of St. Anne's Church.
There Dagger greets her uncle, Father Michael Bowen.

    Dagger introduces Cloak as Ty.
He seems agitated and tells Dagger to leave him alone when she asks what is upsetting him.
He wishes that he had his power as Cloak back and sulks in the shadows.

Illyana recounts what had happened to her, Cloak and Dagger in Limbo.
She tells Professor X that her decision to try to help remove their powers with magic.
She took on the light and shadow from them and it proved to be too much for her body to take on.
The powers seemed to have been taken on by the group of New Mutants.
Cloak and Professor X talk about the loss of his powers
and Cloak eventually agrees that he will take on the powers again.

Illyana transports the group to Limbo.
There Rogue and Professor X take on the powers from the group.
They start with Wolfsbane and take on the light from her.
Then, Sunspot is next and the shadow that has enveloped him is not wanting to leave him without a fight.
Magik summons her Soulsword and strikes out at the shadow.
Cloak battles the shadow and realizes how it is when he uses his powers on others. Rogue has to intervene

and take on both the light and the shadow.
Magik then casts an exorcism spell.
Then, everyone wakes up in the church and they realize that they are all back to normal.

Cloak and Dagger take off to fight crimes again.
The New Mutants are fast asleep after their ordeal
and Magik falls asleep while talking to Father Bowen and Professor X.

Meanwhile, in uptown New York, a street junkie names Slick tries to give drugs to two young adults.
Cloak and Dagger attack and scare Slick into fainting and Dagger calls her uncle back up
and asks for a favor to look after the two young adults.
Then they take off into the dawn and realize that this is who they are as heroes and fighters of crime.

They were - they even had The Mutant Misadventures of Cloak And Dagger.

As it turned out - Dagger's original power was the darkness one and Cloak's was the light; but the experimental drugs swapped their powers.

    Le Sigh.
