If I recall correctly, Peter & MJ were living in Avengers Tower at the time (before Peter revealed his ID to the world) and MJ got caught walking into the tower late at night by the press and, to protect Peter's secret, she told them she was having an affair with Tony Stark...but it's actually funnier without the context.
